I am applying for financial aid at umich and they require a css profile.

Here is my situation:
My parents are divorced, my mom was unemployed since 2009 and my dad wasn't required to pay alimony anymore since 2009. I have lived with my mom my whole life, but I used to go to my dads house every other weekend when I was under 16 yrs old. Mom is the legal guardian by law...

my Mom does not make any money and is living with a friend. She has a retirement account with about 100k.
My Dad makes about 100k but I do not live with him. Neither of my parents pay for college but they do give me gifts. How will my situation affect my financial aid at umich. I am coming from california so my tuition will be about 37-40k....

Only Umich will be able to answer that question for you. Since your parents are the first 2 people in line when it comes to paying for your education, expect for them to pay something. I would recommend you running your numbers through the net price calculator so that you will have some idea as to what is expected.

The University of Michigan requires both the FAFSA and the CSS Profile as financial aid applications. The FAFSA will only use your mom’s info…but for the Profile, your mom will file the Profile and your dad the non-custodial parent profile. It’s required.

You mention alimony…what about child support? Did your dad pay that as well (and does he pay it now…perhaps up to your 18th birthday). That counts too.

You need to include living costs as well…room/board/books/personal expenses/travel. Here are the costs for UMich for an OOS student from their website.

I’m not sure you will get the needed aid from UMich…but you won’t know until you apply. Your dad’s income/assets WILL be considered. How they use this is up to them because they are a Profile school. It doesn’t matter if he WILL not pay…what matters if if they compute that he CAN pay.

I hope you have some schools on your application list that are more in keeping with your family financial situation.

The calculator says I will be getting 13-26k because it does not add noncustodial parent contribution for divorced, but that seems off from what I have heard…

In our case UMich did not ask for non-custodial parents financial information. I do not know if it was because the custodial parent was remarried.
