How much does senior schedule matter?

I got the luck of the draw this year...all of my classes are scheduled for the same period and it bumped me out of Physics H, so now that class is full. I will be lucky if I get into it...might end up taking A and then trying to move up at the beginning of the year.

Since I have been screwed out of so many class (AP stat, physics) I might be forced to take some dumb classes like business principles, marketing 2, and an independent study. If I take an independent study I will actually have something to show for it, like a portfolio of quality feature stories (my favorite part of journalism).

Will they look down on me and think I really just slacked off? I'll still be taking AP Calc BC, AP economics, and AP spanish, just not sure on the others yet. I plan on being an economics major, hopefully at Northwestern :)

Rigor of senior schedule does matter, but the scheduling problems obviously aren’t your fault. Make sure your counselor explains in his rec why you weren’t able to get some of the classes you wanted to take. I know that when I couldn’t get into physics at my school, I took a CC physics class over the summer, and then my counselor write an explanatory note. But no, I don’t think you’ve slacked off; AP Calc BC is more impressive than AP Stats anyway. And what you plan on doing with the independent study is a good idea and will look good for college. Another thing you could consider is taking an online AP or college-level course during one of your periods instead of taking a lower-level elective. I know they let kids do this at my school if they have scheduling problems, so maybe you could see if there’s something similar at yours. Good luck!

Thanks for the input! That summer class - was it when you were a rising senior or when you were a rising college freshman? If I am not allowed to take physics honors, would it benefit me more to take a-level physics or something like marine bio and anatomy?

I’m gonna ask this again because it’s looking like I can’t get into physics honors because my guidance department is dumb, so I’m probably going to have to take A-level physics.

It’ll make my schedule look like…

Physics A
AP Calc BC
AP Econ
AP Spanish
AP Stat
Gym
Ind. study (portfolio of newspaper stories)
English A

It’s a very strong senior schedule.

Drop the “dumb”. Attitude counts for a great deal in college applications. You’re incredibly fortunate to go to a high school that offers you with the range of course options that you have.

^ Hahah, sorry they just seemed to have a hard time scheduling this year. A lot of my friends have been encountering issues. Unfortunately, it’s the kids taking honors and AP classes. I really do have a good attitude it’s just annoying.

Good news though - I’ll probably get into Physics H.

So the following schedule is a strong enough schedule for a school like Northwestern to consider my application? Not sure how to word that, but I think you know what I mean

AP Environmental
AP Calc BC
AP Econ
AP Spanish
Physics H
Gym
Ind. Study
English 4A
