How much does the essay weigh for admission?

When I visited BU’s website, it seems like they make a great deal over the essay.
So I’m wondering … how much does it weigh into consideration when making a decision?
I applied regular and although my test score sucks, my GPA is pretty good, I have a variety of ECs, and I personally thought my essay was well written. I had others close to me and people in the CC Community take a look and I received some overall good feedback. I was hoping my essay would make up for my low test score.

i think that essay is actually a make or break thing. some admissions officers like to read your essay first so if you write something really well, it could have a lasting effect whilst they review your application and other materials. I personally thought i wrote a terrible essay which led to me not getting much financial aid/scholarship money even though my grades were up. it really depends on the person! however, writing a good essay will never hurt you

Essay matters a lot here at BU. My grades were purely average (I took AP’s though) and so were my scores (high for math, but my writing was hilariously horrible). In my essay I just wrote everything I could about how much I loved what I do (I’m a biomedical engineer) and I can tell that that made a big difference in their decision. I love engineering, I did robotics, stage crew, anything that was technical, but I was never good at high school style classes because I thought they were all boring. So basically, get your essay top notch, make it inspirational, make it bleed out who you are, and you’ll be surprised how much of a difference it can make.

Wow, really? Thanks! I knew it mattered, but never thought it could really mean so much  Which I hope it does because my ACT score is very bad :expressionless: And my GPA isn’t exactly great, but it’s not too low either.

Just curious, and you don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, but what was your GPA and SAT score?

gpa ~ 3.8 weighted and sat ~ 2000

I was waitlisted but I messed up bad in high school and didnt explain why. My essay was also terrible. Im sure you have a MUCH better chance than i did lol fyi, I currently attend bu

We are talking about the common app essay and not the supplement essay, right? Both my essays were above-average, nothing extraordinary.

Alectricity - Lol, nooooooo. I would be incredibly lucky to even get accepted. My GPA is around ~3.8 too, but my score is terribly embarassing compared to yours -_- so I’m sure my chance is very slim. No harm in applying I guess, right?

Raed247 - Yes, we are talking about the common app essay  But for the supplement, I think mine were blahh, nothing special.

my best wishes to you jenonymous :] when i say i messed up, i mean i messed up haha If you have any more questions about bu, feel free to pm me!

COPIED from another thread I responded to:
“Wow, I can’t even remember my stats anymore. I would have to say somewhere in the mid 600’s and low 700’s for the SATs. And for the ACT I got a 29. My grades were average (mostly B’s and some A’s if I liked the class and then one C every year in something) but I took AP Physics, AP Bio, and AP History (And AP Spanish for one year but I dropped that my senior year.”

Arieapple, pshtttt, those are excellent SAT/ACT scores to me! Puts my scores to shame lol.
