I was neither by my school to apply. Around the top 25% are invited to apply. Not sure if I will get in tho.
Thanks
I meant invited not neither
I think it is expected, there are a lot of kids in National Honor Society. At least in my school, almost everyone who got admitted was in National Honors Society.
It’s a nice to have, but not a deal breaker. It’s an EC, if you have others, you’ll be fine for admission.
It’s not as big a deal as it once was when it was much more selective. What matters more are your grades and test scores. But if you get in it’s something you can put on your application. My D got many merit scholarships and was not part of the national honors society. She did Latin honor society and science honors society instead. My S is at an IVY and although he could have he did not apply and was not part of any honor society.
Also, being a member of the National Honor Society provides you with many community service opportunities to volunteer for. It’s easier than searching for them alone.
I agree that volunteering looks good on an application and if getting into the National Honors Society helps you in that aspect then I think you should do it.
I think for super-competitive schools NHS on the application is not so much a “plus”, but its absence (if it was available at your school) may be perceived as a concern.
I feel it is only important if you volunteer, have a leadership position, etc. Other than that it’s probably useless, especially at top schools where everybody will have it written somewhere on their application. Admittance also varies from school to school. At magnet schools I know of you must have a very high gpa, and have a minimum amount of community service and extracurricular involvement. But at my neighborhood high school you just need over a 90% average and you are in.
