How much has CC helped you?

On a scale from 1 to 10 with ten being humongously, how much has this website helped you in general? What has it helped you with?

I’d say 6.5, verging to 7. It has helped to a degree of 8-9 on some specific schools. But generally, 6.5 - 7. Mostly it’s about the general system. CC is a collection of helpful individuals. I’ve done quite some threads about my school choices but it got answers from people who often were interested in promoting their own local school and often ignoring my original inqueries.

That said, I’ve gained my best moments on CC through the PM system and got into several email exchanges from ex-students and parents to current one’s. If I had been more active, I think I would have upped the score to perhaps 7.5 or in that range.

I’d give it a 10.

This website has served as a benefactor through its wealth of information. Individuals are enabled to assist one another, something that further develops each student’s comprehension of certain aspects. In addition, if it weren’t for this website, I wouldn’t have enrolled in my new school.

It’s helped enormously in broadening my perspective on college admissions, and in giving me the resolve to stick with my specific interests EC and class-wise. But the chances threads freaked me out freshman and half of sophomore year, and I thought I was kind of a failure for a while there.

So, now that I can take it with a grain of salt, probably 8. But before, I don’t even want to rank.

I’m going to say 10. CC introduced me to QuestBridge and made me realize that I was a very high caliber applicant when I honestly had no idea that was the case. When I first encountered this site, I thought George Washington was my reach and that I’d be lucky to graduate with less than $40,000 debt. Now I will attend Stanford University and graduate debt-free. I am certainly doing my best to pay it forward.

^That’s an awesome story. Seriously.

10.
As my DD attended a public high school, where there were approx 700 students for one gc…I so appreciated the help and direction of this forum.

While I don’t have an amazing story like applicannot, I can’t put a value on the knowledge I’ve gleaned from CC. Especially the archives–you would be surprised what was written in 2004 that is still applicable today.

I’d say at least a 9. In part due to the wonderful spread sheet that Keilexandra sent me! That spread sheet showed me how much info I needed to learn about each school.

10
still remember when I just moved to the US in 8th grade, I was aiming for an 1800 on the SAT and planning to apply to penn state as my first choice. After I got out of ESL in 9th grade, I started to look for more opportunities and I guess I was one of the lucky few who were introduced to CC~
Without CC, I wouldn’t try the ACT and get a 32, I wouldn’t realize that I actually stood a chance at Cornell, I wouldn’t look for summer opportunities, etc~
so yea, thank you CC!

Not at all. I feel like most kids on here are high schoolers. Wait lemme rethink that… chances threads are a 0, while the remainder of the site is somewhere between an 8-9.5. Some college kids are REALLY helpful. However, those HSers just don’t know what they’re talking about (considering I am one as well and don’t know what I’m talking about).

Probably a 9 - I don’t have any huge success story, but it has helped so much in terms of the little things. Little tidbits about APs, SATs, planning out courses to take, best prep books, all sorts of “inside” info, the list just goes on and on…
It also helped me SO much in crafting a great list of schools to apply to. I never, ever would have applied EDII to Swarthmore without CC - I didn’t get in, but that’s okay. I’m still glad I found out about it and was able to discover how much I liked it.

The same holds true for many of my other schools - I probably would have just gone off what my counselor said and ended up with a decent list of schools, but CC really helped me choose a great list.

^^rainbowrose, of my MANY (ETA: 4000+) posts on CC I think about 5 have been in HSL and Chances combined. Avoiding those two forums will go a long way toward increasing the quality-to-junk ratio you have to filter.

thanks Keilexandra
I find HSL interesting sometimes but those chances threads… OH GOODNESS

Absolutely a 10. I "accidentallly found CC in July of 2007, and by November 30th 2007, my daughter had acceptance to Amherst where she will graduate with zero debt. In a very short but stressfull 4 1/2 months, I went from worrying about how to send my daughter ANYWHERE, to an amazing school. I will never forget the parent posters that helped me along the way. I gave my daughter life, but CC parents helped give her a future. Thanks again.

I think we need to compile a list of awesome CC stories to encourage newbies to stay off of the ridiculous forums and focus on the good stuff.

no amazing stories though, but it’s great to hear about those whose lives have been really changed.

It’s actually angered me quite a bit ha with all the ‘omg I have lyk no chance at a top school with my 2360 sat and 4.6gpa I’m such a failure’ ■■■ like please I got into decent schools by no means the best with TRUELY average scores

I’d say 3-4. I was going to do the things I did and apply to the schools I did anyways. I am glad to help others though.

It’s so useful, but it wastes so much of my time!
