How much is a typical meal at UVA dining hall?

So I’m still deciding between getting 50 or 100 meal plan per semester.

The plans must have been made by business majors because at first glance, 100 meal plan seems much cheaper relative to 50 meal plan, per meal, which is how it should be. But if you take out the plus money, there’s hardly any difference. (around a dollar cheaper per meal). In both cases, one swipe costs 11-13 dollars.

Here’s the thing, I don’t eat a lot and I don’t want to be forced to pay for meals that I might not eat. If I do 50 meal plan, I can always add plus money any time whereas I can’t take out money from swipes I didn’t use.

Plus, it gives us per semester price but it’s actually an annual plan so I’m guessing we won’t be able to change after a full semester. I’m almost certain I want the 50 meal plan (even though I don’t cook) because there’s a lot of plus money and in case I run out, and I will, I can always add more.

But it won’t be worth it if a typical meal costs like 15 dollars when we don’t use swipes.

Also, when you use swipe, how does it work? Is it one swipe per one thing or one swipe per food, snacks, and drinks and stuff? If that’s the case I definitely am getting 100 meal plan.

Thanks a lot.

One option is to get the minimal meal plan and then add plus dollars as you need them.

If you are a large eater, the all you can eat meal swipes can be worthwhile. Other people feel the meal swipes are over-priced. Many people are not thrilled about the dining hall food. There are some other options on-grounds, where you can use plus dollars. As an upperclassman, my son found that buying food at the West Range Cafe worked out well for lunches, using plus dollars.

Thanks Charliesch. But you kind of repeated what I mentioned and not really address my problems lol
Thanks for the tip though!

@lightpassion, have you contacted Dining with your questions about the meal plans? Just go to the source. They are always quick to reply to questions when I ask them.

A meal (a swipe) is used as an all-you-can-eat dining call. You swipe when you arrive and eat whatever you want. That’s why meals are expensive. People often eat their meal and then grab a banana, apple, cookie, etc. to eat later. Meals don’t get dramatically cheaper just because you load more onto your card.

Ohhh thank you Dean J. I wasn’t exactly sure what they meant by all-you-can-eat. Not everything is what they sound like thesedays. Thanks

All you can eat? Or all your system can tolerate? (smirk)
