i know they sell carpet on move in day...does anyone know how much it runs for and if its worth it?

YES decidedly so! I cannot recall the price around $100 -$150 . We went around our town and priced carpeting and that price was close to what we saw. Perhaps you could get a better grade if you buy it yourself BUT the hassle of lugging a large piece of carpeting..let alone fitting it in your car is not worth it. We have a Landcruiser and there was no way we could have fit the carpeting in along with the other stuff. (Of course you could go with a smaller piece of carpet - we went with the suggested size for the room)
You should get a flyer from the people who sell carpet at UMD (the official carpet sellers) showing color selection and offering to put it in the room. Do it! Then you dont have to carry it to the room. OR you can wait till you get to campus and they are set up outside some of the dorms. You would then have to carry it yourself (I think) to your room and they may or may not have your first choice in color.
So my advice is to order it when you get the brochure and have it delivered to your room.
However, you or whoever gets there first will have to lay the carpet down which is a hassle..We got there second so her roommate had already laid down the carpet.
She and her roommate decided that roommate would supply fridge and we would supply rug.
We picked the beige for showing less dirt..lots of kids pick other colors though.
I offered that carpet here free on the boards at the end of last term cus she is moving to a dorm that is carpeted. No one took it though and we ended up throwing it away in the dumpster by the dorm which a lot of folks do. For one thing it was pouring rain..I mean pouring and it would have ruined the carpet..for another no room to put it in truck and she didnt need it. Plus they get kinda tatty..
You will want a carpet to warm the floor and make the room more enjoyable!

oh wow thanks alot! but where do i get a brochure from?

The carpet people send a brochure to all freshman getting housing on campus. I would wait a couple weeks and if you dont get one..call housing and ask for the name of the folks who supply the carpeting - maybe they can tell you. Sorry I cant recall the name of the company.

angstridden: What type of carpeting is it? Pile, etc? Do remember the size? (I think I read somewhere 5 x 8, but I'm not certain.) Can padding be laid underneath? AND do you happen to know the color selection? Sorry for all the questions, but I saw a piece of carpet yesterday I thought would work, and was just checking before I bought it. Do you know how the carpet situation affects those entering early week? If they don't deliver until a certain time, d. will already be moved in, so that's why I was thinking we could just take it ourselves. Depending on the size, it should fit on the back of a truck. Thanks.

It was larger than that I think around 9x12 (dont hold me to that) but it almost covered the complete floor in the room. So if you look up sizes of the dorm rooms ..you can assume the carpet would be a few inches shorter on each side. Colors..I remember they had navy, beige, burgundy and sorry thats all I recall, but there were more choices.
Pile is about 1/2 inch shag length..low pile but not as tight as berber...its not a quality carpet -but it works.
As far as purchasing..its delivered to the room and in D's case her roommate got there first and laid it out.
We have a Toyota Land Cruiser and we had the back seats out. There was no way we could have fit it in the there with all her other college stuff. No way.
Also its heavy and awkward to carry so having it delivered was good.
The carpet people actually tell you what size to get for which dorm.

Hubby says he thinks 5x8 would be too small.

BTW another handy thing is to get those rolling carts they sell at craft stores, and discount stores. We got one large and one small. The large fit in her closet and holds things like medical kit, hairspray etc. The small next to her bed and we put her alarm clock on top and the drawers held her books etc.
We got these coupons for 40% at craft store and used that so they were pretty inexpensive.

Ok...Thanks. I'll hold tight until I find out for sure which dorm she's in. She's living large this week in the Commons with team mates...I told her not to get too comfortable in the lap of luxury there...hehe...except she's sleeping on the floor and that's not fun!

You may also want to pick up those egg crate things..(spongy) for the bed to put under mattress pad as it makes bed more comfy. Beds are standard size so you do not have to buy extra long sheets.

And if she is in a twin room and they dont bunk you can get bed risers to lift the bed up at Bed Bath and Beyond..we didnt get them but her roommate did and it allowed more storage under bed.

I think the carpet also came in baby blue and forest green. I know I opted for beige as the most practical..ie dark blue shows every spot.
She did not take a vacuum but we would run up and vaccum when we saw her every so often.

Also dont forget to get a water filter pitcher..this will save bucks in the long run and give her a nice supply of fresh water.

Yeah, I got one of those egg crate thingys yesterday. Little vacuum is a good idea. I was kind of hoping for like a greyish color carpet...which would go w/ anything...she's a bit of a neat 'n tidy freak, like things to look nice and put togethet...we'll see how that works. Water filter pitcher? They need one of those? I have risers on the list as well. What about curtains? Are the windows all different sizes? Do they have the hardware already installed for rods?
