About how much should I expect to pay for an approx 13x13 carpet remnant? Any suggestions on where to buy? Home Depot. Lowes, carpet stores, etc?. Any suggestions on how to prevent it from unraveling once I cut it to size? Any other tips? Leaving on Monday!

I don't know if you can do it at the last minute (might have better luck at a carpet store), but I would strongly suggest getting it bound. It doesn't add that much to the price.

My d's college (UNC-CH) actually contracted with a service that would deliver a carpet to the dorm room. Room sized (12x14), regular pile with bound edges...I believe I paid about $110. Made the arrangements online. Have you contacted your school to see if they have similar service?

I would think that 13x13 would be hard ... since most carpet comes in 12 foot rolls. Usually 12x somethings are fairly easy to come by. The 12' sides are bound... or at least finished somehow and the other sides are unfinished.

Lots of stores have smaller cheap carpet available right now .. .under $100 for 8x12s and things like that. Do you really need 13x13? Think Staples, LNT BBB etc.

Son went to Home Depot and talked them down in price for the end of a roll of fairly nice quality carpet. Think they only paid about 50 for it. They just cut the edges, as the room is so packed the edges are hidden by furniture, etc. in most places and at the doorway I believe they taped the edge.

I would also recommend getting carpet padding...that stuff is dirt cheap and easy to cut. The carpet in my d's room is nice; but without the pad, the floor is not too comfy for sitting.

I bought a $40 area rug at IKEA is that was 4'4 by 6'6 and it fit my single room down the middle. it comes in one other size. Try an area rug instead of wall to wall carpeting- the area rug will also be easier to clean.

Be careful when considering the size of carpet...it has to be able to fit under doors, etc. An area rug that fits the middle open area of the room will be fine, the outside areas will be packed with furniture.

Thanks to all. After talking with S, the actual measurements are closer to 12x14. I will bring carpet tape and a knife along with. Will also get a carpet pad, good idea.

My sister recently bought a bunch of 2' carpet samples (discontinued patterns) for her dorm -- $2 a piece including leftover scraps of carpet pad. Each one is a different pattern but they all have the same color scheme. I thought that was a neat way to carpet a dorm room for less than $20 (albeit with a "patchwork" kind of look).

We bought two 5 x 8 area rugs (on clearance of course, 80% off) and put them side-by-side so resulting in 10 x 8 coverage, maybe a little more with some gap in between. Used carpet pad with non-skid padding. The area rugs came scotchguarded and are pretty heavy duty. Mohawk carpet. Easier to transport and to carry since they are 5 x 8 individually rather than 10 or 12 feet long.

I can just see me and son hauling a HUGE carpet up 4 flights of stairs! That's sooo not happening! They came in long plastic sleeves which he can use to store them in during the summers. We did the same thing for his older sis and it worked out great. She is on her second year of them and they still look brand new. The stain resistant worked wonders. Both got deeper, darker colors so doesn't show the dirt as much.

We leave on Friday, trying to have the old truck fitted for new plugs and oil change so she'll make the long drive. Boys are out there working on her now. I can hear ger groaning all ready!!!

If you have a Big Lots or KMart you will do a LOT better price wise on a bound remnant than at a carpet store. Carpet store remnants tend to be expensive. We got DS's first carpet, a bound 5x7 rug for $20 at Big Lots. Target has some too.

Got a very nice 12x14 remnant at the local carpet store for $65. They didn't have any padding available. Went to Lowe's and the carpet pad was more expensive than the carpet! I will keep looking. Carpet pad is not dirt cheap. Store employee said something about Katrina inflating prices. Seems to me I've been hearing the Katrina excuse for just about all rising prices. That was a year ago! He may have to tough it out without carpet pad. I went to a military school where not only didn't we have carpet, but we had to buff our own floors each week.

I found rebond online (looking to somehow figure a way to get it up to UNC) for $3.99 a square yard. My d's carpet is actually a 10x12 in a 12x14 room. That would put the cost of the padding at just over $50. I think I can do better so I'm gonna keep looking.

Shame on retailers for gouging. On our way back for Carolina, we stopped at a hotel on I-10 near Biloxi. It was filled with contractors who lived there and paid a hefty premium over normal rates. My husband took the manager to task big time.

btw...you may have gotten a better quality carpet than what I purchased through UNC. I appreciated the convenience of not having to haul it from Texas to NC, and the price was okay....but it really does nothing to enhance the comfort level other than muffle noise. For my d's room, I think padding is gonna be necessary and I'm probably going to have to pay a premium for it.

We got the same carpet deal as Idmom last year for S. It was so convenient to have it sitting in the room when we arrived. At the end of the year it was deposited in the dumpster outside the dorm because it was trashed. So don't spend too much or go to great lengths hoping it will be good for future rooms because chances are it won't survive freshman year!

haha PackMom - After just four days, on our way out to head home, I noted d's dorm carpet already looked ready for the dumpster. My d is ferociously hard on carpeting too. What is with girls and makeup and markers, etc...?

To Those of you who ordered thru the school, you are probably the wise ones. I just picked up this 12x14 carpet beast and it fills the car! We are going to look like the Beverly Hillbillies heading off to college!

^ You won't look worse that we did driving up with a closed U-haul with a Vespa inside. Before we opened it, people were looking at us like 'HOW MUCH STUFF does your daughter NEED at college?'
