How much is too much?

How many aps is too much? How much work is too much?

Five or more AP classes is too much, in my opinion. Assuming that they’re all taken in the same year.

Interesting

3.

At least, in the context of my school. Even more than 1 is a lot.

But to please you CC’ers, 6 is too many.

I don’t really see a definite answer to that. Too many AP classes depends on the individual’s ability to handle work. Some people become stretched to the max at three, while others can handle a full eight schedule. Also, it can depend on the level of your school’s curriculum. If you have mostly relaxed teachers, that do not issue that many projects, homework, etc., of course a large amount of AP classes will be manageable. However if you have very tough teachers, you might only be able to handle the work of three.

Sorry for the long-winded answer. ^_^

How many is too many?

@Annie; Indeed. Balance and juggling is something a LOT of high schoolers seem to suck at. I was just talking about it with some of my co-workers and we came to the consensus that while some of our peers appear to be brilliant on the outside (AP’s/challenging courses + varsity sports + leadership/activities), they are absolutely garbage at all of them. They take shortcuts in their classes, they don’t give 100% to sports, and they’re not really that involved. It’s a shame for everyone involved, especially the person in question.

Well, that was a bit of a tangent, but yeah. Whatever a person can manage.

At our kids’ HS, the GC suggested only 1-2 APs/year. That said, she had no issue with kids who were able taking up to 5 or 6 APs in the same year. Depends on the kid & how much work the APs really are–it varies widely by kid & HS.

23 AP is too much. IMO

Okay honestly, I would think 5 is a good number.

thanks for all the information guys!! I’m trying to decide how many I should take. And which year to take most of them - I would assume that junior year is the year to take the super hard schedule?

Like 9 is not too hard, then sophomore is a little harder, than BAM Junior year comes in with INSANE HARDNESS! Next up is Senior year with a moderately hard schedule! And that’s a wrap folks!

I don’t even know why I did that
I should edit that
I won’t

Junior year is a time to do your best (just like any time, really). Whether that means working with a heavy load or pushing yourself to the extreme, you need to do well.

I shouldn’t have to mention it as well, but by ‘do your best’ I mean do well in academics and enjoy your life.

Honestly, I think anymore than 4 is pushing it. People think you need to take at least 15 APs in high school to get into a good college when that just isn’t the case. Sure, if you think you can handle 5+ APs and succeed in them without contemplating suicide, have at it.

5 is around the most u should take at once unless u can reasonably handle more

To be honest, I think it all depends on the person.
Some people feel overwhelmed with even 1 AP (as it is the case with most of the people in my school), and so for them, I’d say taking 2+ is overkill.
Other people enjoy AP classes though, and have no problem taking 5+ AP classes in a year, and so for them I don’t think there is such a thing as “enough”.

Do enough to the point where you are challenged but not crying yourself to sleep from stress every night. The number itself is different for everyone.

In my opinion, 5 should be the absolute maximum for any given year. For top students.

1 English
1 Math
1 Science
1 Social Science
1 Language/Elective/or if you want to double up on one of the others

Anything more than that is pointless, unneeded work. No college is gonna say “nope, not enough rigor. sorry.” with 5 per year. I could say more but I’ve already ranted about this in the other AP thread.

Just ask yourself the following questions:

Can I manage this many AP classes while maintaining healthy school-life balance?
Will I get 7-8+ hours of sleep per night?
Will I be able to continue a few activities that I genuinely care about?
Will taking ___ amount of AP classes cause my individual grades to decline?

The number of AP classes that one can manage varies. I’m taking 7 AP classes this year, which is, admittedly, quite a lot of work. However, I am very interested in the subject matter of each course; the time commitment doesn’t bother me.

For my school, 5 is the absolute maximum. The only girl I know who takes more than that is always struggling to finish her work, and she barely gets any sleep xD

Depends on the school. Some school’s have easier/harder AP classes even in the same subject.

I’m taking six next year. Kill me now…

Actually, the administration has been dumbing down the AP classes at my school so the floodgates have opened.

I wish there was a way I could take one ap during freshman year to get a feel for aps - like how hard they are, etc
