How much leeway do you get as a recruited athlete?

Hi, i'm a junior at a small highschool hoping to attend duke but i know that its probably a reach, my freshman year i had a 3.5 w gpa whih was really bad and i realized that going into soph and junior year having all a's and i so far i have around a 4.4 w gpa. I havent taken the sat's but they'll i've been studying every summer after freshman year, doing the tests on my own and will probably be at least near 2280.
My etracurriculars are pretty good i think, being an eagle scout, 2 yr emt and Office of emergency management, 120 hrs of community services at a down syndrome camp and a soup kitchen i've gone to since i was 12. Also, i started a club at my school that was a branch of my brothers group Students for haiti fundraising over 500 dollars.
My intended majors are either buisness, finance, or nursing.
In cross country and track, i will be able to be recruited and am going to talk to coaches of other colleges soon and hopefully duke if i might be able. I was just hoping to hear your opinions before i try. Thanks!

Try cross-posting on the Athletic Recruits forum. Lots of expertise there.

how fast are you running? Your academic stats look pretty competitive at a glance, and I’d say if you nail that SAT, you’d have a chance of getting in even without athletics. if you are running on the order of 48/1:55/4:20/9:25 (probably any one or two of those times if you are a mid-d or distance runner. if you are sprinter or thrower, I dunno what the general recruiting standards are), you probably have a very good chance of getting in. Have you corresponded with their coach? he’s probably the best person to ask.

yeah i run the 800 in a 1 52 and 1600 in a 4 14 but i dont think i could get in based on academics Dukes avg gpa is a 4.64 i have around a 4.41 gpa

I think your times and SAT can make up for what you lack in GPA. your best bet is to talk to the coach. 1:52 and 4:14 are stellar times for a junior, especially since you’ve got all of this coming outdoor season to improve them. if you can hit, say, 1:50, and around 2250 SAT, then I’d say you’re in at any d1 school you want to go to–be it duke, stanford, ivy league, or wherever.

alright thanks

Just to let you know: Duke does not offer a business, finance, or nursing major to undergraduates. The closest thing to business here is an economics degree, which is a liberal-arts degree instead of a pre-professional degree. You can concentrate in Finance within the Economics degree.

I am not an expert on what times you would need to be recruited by Duke, but if they are fast enough for the coach at Duke to want you, you will have no problem being admitted. Recruited athletes get a lot of leeway! Have you filled out their recruiting questionnaire yet? Have you looked at your times compared to their current athletes? Good luck!
