If one attended HYPS for undergrad, how much of an advantage does one have when applying for HLS/YLS/SLS? With a decent GPA and LSAT (i dunno, maybe something like >3.7 and 170+), is one more or less a shoe-in?

HY, at any rate.

Not a big boost, for Yalies at least: http://ucs.yalecollege.yale.edu/sites/default/files/Law_School_Application_Statistics.pdf

Was startled to see 26 matriculants out of 40 admits – only 65%. I had thought that YLS had 85%+ matriculation (34/40), but the Internet says its broader number is just 80% (32/40).

Anyway, means of 172/3.85 seems to suggest to me that Yale undergrads do get a slight boost in the admissions process.

Thanks for the link BDM. That low of 18% accepted at UVA makes me happy. UVA ain’t impressed by Yale undergrads.

Sorry to ask a dumb question but does anyone know where I could find similar sets of statistics for other top law schools?

“UVA ain’t impressed by Yale undergrads.”

Probably due to the fact that many Yalies with low LSAT apply to UVa because they follow the “if you have low LSAT, ED to UVa” rule.
“does anyone know where I could find similar sets of statistics for other top law schools?”

I think that Yale is the only one that puts the stats online. Career services at other schools keep records as well. I have seen stats from a couple of non-HYP Ivies, and their stats are similar to Yale’s.

With a 10.8% admission rate, I doubt that many people (including Yalies) with low LSAT scores can get into UVA Law, even ED. And I wouldn’t draw conclusions from the link you provided, a lot of the advise is shady.

I would bet that you don’t get an admission boost attending HYPS. See the thread, “What I learned about law school admissions.”

Yes, you will see a higher percentage of HYPS grads attending top law schools. However, it probably isn’t because they are getting an admission boost. I would bet it is because they have much higher median LSATs and the average GPA at HYPS is much higher than that of most other institutions.

“With a 10.8% admission rate, I doubt that many people (including Yalies) with low LSAT scores can get into UVA Law, even ED.”

People with relatively low LSAT (mid 160s) and high GPA (3.9+) aiming for the T14’s tend to ED to UVa. The main point is, the fact that UVa’s admissions rate for Yalies is much lower than that of HYS and other better law schools suggests that the Yalies applying to UVa aren’t the same caliber as the ones applying to HYS. You can argue that Yalies applying to UVa are of the same caliber as the ones applying to HYS and that UVa just doesn’t like Yalies, but I don’t think that argument is sound at all.
