How much of an impact does the counselor recommendation have on admissions?

I recently transferred schools, because my parents and I had a falling out with the administration at my old school due to their treatment of me due to my health issues. I just received a copy of my school report from them, and my guidance counselor checked the box that says fairly strongly in terms of how she recommends me and good for personal qualities and character. Will this negatively impact me?

Who is actually supplying your counselor letter for college? This sounds like a letter from one HS to another.

How did you see your GC LOR in the first place? At my daughter’s HS we were strongly advised to waive seeing any LOR and that colleges would know if we didn’t. Can your new GC write the LOR or was it already submitted?

My previous counselor wrote my counselor recommendation. The only reason I HAD to see my recommendations and school report was because I have to mail them to a few schools I am applying to, and the guidance counselor who wrote it cannot do that. I didn’t want to ask my new counselor for a recommendation because he has only known me for a week or two so far. That wouldn’t really make sense to get one from him.

Also, at my previous school, I asked the counselor about whether or not we were allowed to see the letters because I’ve heard previous seniors talk about their letters. And apparently the school fully allows you to look at them, as long as the teacher is okay with it. So, basically, at my previous school, it was up to the writer of the letter as to whether or not the student was permitted to look at the letter.

Well, what’s done is done since this LOR is already submitted. If the rest of your application is very strong, hopefully it wont make any difference.

This depends on your college targets and how suited you are to them. Some GCs do write letters that are poor, in one way or another and adcoms can tell it’s that GC (inexperience, idiocy or just not up on what a decent letter is.) Are you applying to any colleges that primarily admit based on stats?

You should talk to the new GC. Is there any positive feedback she can report, from the new teachers?

The majority of the schools I am applying to have holistic admissions. I don’t know how to add my new counselor on common app, so that he can submit my midyear and final report eventually. I added/invited him, but I had to choose college access counselor, because it wouldn’t allow me to choose another counselor. I guess I should contact the people of common app.

You can have your new guidance counselor write your letter of recommendation. The new school should just send the transcript from your old school to colleges without any additional forms or information. Talk with the new school about the “package” that will be sent.
