Do they just see the final GPA? The GPA of each year? Each semester? Or do they actually see what grades you got in what classes? And does it vary among colleges?

All high schools will send final class grades.

Most will send your overall GPA on time of transcript creation (semester 1 of senior year).

Yes they will see what grades you got in all of the classes for all four years.

Not only do they see every grade, up to first semester senior yearm, some of them will recalculate your gpa using their own methods, so your school gpa may be higher or lower than the gpa the college uses. The California UC system schools are especially a good example of this.

Transcripts usually do not show quarter grades for each class.

Some schools’ transcripts only show a year-end grade for each class.

Some schools’ transcripts show semester grades and a year end grade for each class.

Your parents have the right to request a copy of your transcript from your high school if you’d like to see exactly what the colleges are seeing.

I agree with everything above.

In general, they’ll SEE whatever your high school sends. But that determination is made by the format of the official transcript for your school district (or your school, if you’re in private school).

And, as others have said, they’ll LOOK AT whatever part of your transcript they choose to look at. Different colleges process the data differently.

I know this is a frustrating non-answer. I want to know right now exactly what the colleges that interest my junior are going to do with the information they get from her high school. But in many cases, it’s just not fully knowable.
