How much research experience is generally needed for the Top 30 MS/PhD schools?

I’m only starting to get experience (as a volunteer, hoping I’ll eventually be able to get a more formal position later on). The problem is I’ll be applying to grad schools next year, and I’m not sure with my GPA (currently 3.26, hoping I can bring it up) that I’ll be a competitive applicant to the top 30.

What field? Generally it is more about quality rather than quantity. If your research experience is good enough to net you a really great reference letter from the supervising faculty member, then you have enough of it.

CS, particularly looking to go into ML/DS/Big Data/AI, or even quant analysis/finance if I can. My current research isn’t exactly related, it’s more a Computational Biology that I’m just starting out on so I’m only learning the ropes; nothing I can do much about as an undergrad since there are more experience masters/PhD students competing for spots as well.

The specific area of your undergraduate research is not as important as the fact that you are doing research. This will help you get good letters of reference. You don’t need to have a publication but it helps.
