How much sleep does the avg. MIT student get?

How much does the average MIT student get? Does it vary with each major?

i sleep 5-6 hours (i slept 3 hours on thursday).
some sleep 7-8 hours, it really depends on how efficient you are and your courseload

thanks for the fast response vecter

Well.... it depends from semester to semester, lol. Last semester was relatively tougher, and my sleep ranged from 5-6 hours to 2-3 hours on a really bad week. Weeks tend to vary a lot as well. If you are unlucky, several deadlines can coincide to make it a rough week. This semester though, I tend to get 8 hours regularly, so pretty much the sleep I got in high school, lol.

It also depends on the person. If you are very efficient and take advantage of most of your daytime hours, you can get pretty good amounts of sleep. If you are like me, and tend to do things more at night, then sleep is the cost ;)

Yeah, i get about 5-6 hours average, 4 on a bad week. If you're very efficient it shouldn't be a problem. My problem is that I'm involved in way too many activities. :)

Edit: And I know plenty of people who average 8 hours a week, so a lot of it depends on either your work ethic or the level of your involvement in outside activities. So basically you are in control of the amount of your sleep. If I wanted more sleep, I'd cut back on my activities.

oh my gosh. i need at least nine hours of sleep. (seriously)

is that amount of hours of sleep common for other top tier schools as well??
or MIT's courseloads are just more demanding than others?

My two friends who attend report 4 and 3.5 hour averages, regularly. Both are course 6, and fairly involved in extracurricular activities.

my roommate is in more extracurriculars than you can count, she's out every day with ECs between 4-9, and she always gets 8 to 9 hours of sleep--it is possible

wow.. so many MIT students on this board :)

mind i ask if any of you are internationals?

What is the greatest factor when it comes to staying up? Problem sets? How hard are most of them?

you can see a lot of them at ocw.mit.edu
just choose the field you want to know about.

i get 6-8 on a weekday 8-12 on a weekend , i have a problem with getting sleep but occasionally i sleep late due to problem sets

2 hours.... :D

I get a lot of sleep.
Usually 10 hours weekdays, including ~2 hours of naps daily, and maybe 14 or so on weekends.
Naps are the college student's best friend.

i average 6 hrs a night, 4 the night before a pset's due (i leave 'em til that day...oops) and longer on the weekends. i'm involved in lots of activites, have a job, and a pretty good social life, tho.

I really want to know.. an answer to my question
Please :D

" is that amount of hours of sleep common for other top tier schools as well??

um. you might want to ask other schools' boards? there's not likely to be many of their students reading this one, or vice versa. and unless we transferred/have large numbers of friends at other top schools (you might, if you went to, say, TJ, or another similarly l33t HS), none of us is likely to know.

I'm a Yalie - I was just randomly surfing the MIT boards. =) I get an average of 6 hours on weekdays and more on weekends. Once a week (usually Thursday) I pull an all-nighter (English essay on Friday morning). My suitemates also get an average 6 hours of sleep, if not less - I think that's pretty normal in all schools.

Here is what my sleep schedule looks like:

Sunday night: 5 hours
Monday: 2-3 hours
Monday night: 6-7 hours
Tuesday: 0-2 hours
Tuesday night: 5 hours
Wednesday: 2-3 hours
Wednesday night: 6-7 hours
Thursday: 0-2 hours
Thursday night: 5-8 hours
Friday: 0-3 hours
Friday night: 10 hours
Saturday: 0-2 hours
Saturday night: 7-10 hours
Sunday: 0-2 hours

I would say my average per day (average per week divided by 7) is 8-10 hours.
