How much will summer internships at law firm help with admission?

I have some connections and have been offered a summer internship at a small time law firm, for all 4 years of my undergrad. Say my GPA and LSATs end up being in the lower to middle range of a schools range, how much do you think it will help?

You have no idea how much I hate/envy you. I'm compiling a list of law firms to send my resume to, hoping that one will write me back so I can intern with them. There's of course a good chance that NONE will write me back. And nobody in my family went to law school so I don't have any connections.

On the other hand, it might. I don't know. Maybe you can say law firm internship->interest in law->that's why you want to go to law school on your essay?

Oh, wait, where are my manners? Congrats!

It's not going to push you over if you're stats aren't good enough... too many people have legal internships (myself included... I'm leaving for it in an hour).

How do legal interships differ from a part-time job as a legal assistant? What kinds of responsibilities are you guys looking for?

How would a consulting or investment banking internship be perceived for law school admissions?

^ Any internship is a good internship.

Is it possible to get an internship in the IP department of a biotech firm? I live right next to Amgen and am currently studying bioengineering (with the intent of going to LS) - how should I go about this?

Try cold-calling their human resources department. That's what I'm doing (actually I'm just going to send my cover letter and resume to some of the larger firms in NYC). I can't tell you that you'll be successful, but they won't bite. What's the worst they can possibly say? No?

Is an internship really any better than a part-time job as a legal assistant? There are plenty of part-time jobs at law firms. As far as law school, I think law schools want to see why you are interested in law. An internship or part-time job in a law firm may help with that, but it is hardly necessary to show you are interested in law.

So again, why are you guys trying to get internships so bad? What are you gonna be doing?

A law firm internship alone won't show that you're interested in the law enough to to go law school. If I can't get part time work at a law firm, then I'm going to try to get a litigation consulting internship. But law minor+prelaw society+observing immigration hearings for the National Lawyers' Guild+law firm internship will.

Actually I'm looking for more of part time work than an internship. Something like I want to work full time over summers and continue on part time during the year.

Hate to keep singing the same tune, but it's your grades and LSATs that get you into law school.
If money isn't an issue, raising your "B" in Chem 101 to a "B+" will help you more than any put the most connected internship.

But, yeah, if you're on the bubble a longstanding demonstrated interest in the law would help (but, again, not at the cost of even .1 off your GPA).

The bubble? Qu'est-ce que c'est?

The bubble would be like being around a school's medians with your stats.

Kay. Thanks.

bump...i like this thread

Speaking of which, I had sent a resume to a law firm a few months ago for a spring internship. It turned out they didn't have any and I took my job this semester for the district attorney's office. Today the law firm called me and want me to interview for a summer job next week.

While it's like my 5th option behind a number of D.C. internships I applied to, other random locations, and staying at school and raising my GPA, it does pay really well.

So yeah, send out a lot of resumes and hope to get lucky.

The thing is I'm probably gonna be apart of the prelaw society next year, plus rush Phi Alpha Delta (law frat) and have the internship. I know that the GPA/LSAT combo is the most important thing but if I'm applying to like top 20 schools I think having as much as I bring to the table is only a good thing right?

I saw that someone said that any internship is a good one. Is this true even if it's for a medical-science research program?

I was just thinking about the same thing a couple of minutes ago.

One word: LSAT.

Law school is a numbers game. LSAT is most important, then GPA. If working will decrease your GPA, do not work.

If you can handle both, then do it. It may help a little, but not too much.
