How much will URM really help?

I'm half Hispanic (mother is 1st gen immigrant) and half white, and I'm just wondering how much this will potentially help me get in. I'm relatively sure I'm already qualified. I have a 2270 SAT, a rigorous schedule with 9 APs, a 96 gpa on a 100 point scale, a solid list of ECs and pretty good essays. I've already received a likely from Columbia. What do you think are the chances that my URM status will give me that edge I need?

Why wonder now?
Only 20 hours until you know with certainty.

Because the wait is killing me! Haha this is terrible

We could give you our opinions which probably mean incredibly little or you could wait 19 hours and 40 minutes to find out from a very valid and reliable source whether it helped or not…take your pick. :)

Opinions would be nice! Just need some positive encouragement is all

I think of being a URM as the icing on the cake… Though the icing is only good if the cake itself is moist and delicious; meaning if the applicant is already a viable candidate for admission being a URM may give an extra edge.

Yes, I get my point across with food analogies… I love food

I swear I think I’ve used the same cake analogy with a friend :stuck_out_tongue:
but yeah, I agree with Sprinter. You need to be a good applicant before URM can really help.

Who cares? I’m an URM too but I haven’t thought about that fact at all throughout this college process.

Although the cake analogy is correct, for schools like Harvard, where the vast majority of people ARE “moist and delicious” cake, URM status really does help a lot. I know non-hooked Asian American or White applicants who got rejected from all the Ivies and settled for schools like UChicago, who, had they been a URM, would have probably been accepted to HYPSM or even gotten a likely letter. I personally knew a rich white girl, who was really competitive, felt she was entitled to be the smartest at the school, but really wasn’t at all on par with the top students. Her wealthy .001% parents got her registered as a Native American even though she’s only 1/32 Native and not all disadvantaged. She got into every school she applied (HYPSM) to and even a likely from Yale. Guess how unfair that felt when only 1 person that year other than her got into HYPSM (and only one). But that does highlight how much URM, especially Native American at least, can help.

I don’t hate affirmative action and I think it is a necessary system. But I don’t want to downplay its benefits too for the sake of those rejected for URMs. But, don’t let my opinion change yours. You can judge for yourself the benefits of URM status by looking at previous acceptance threads.

^ yup. Lettuce be cereal. Harvard is gonna take a Hispanic/Black/Native American with a 2300 over a White/Asian with a 2300 almost every single time assuming they have similar and qualified stats.

*The flip side of this is that those URMs who ARE really stars (and you could possible be one, I don’t really know), don’t get as much recognition for their capabilities. Which is also unfair to them.

Everyone who gets into Harvard is a star and they all deserve to be recognized as one.

Well I feel like I’ve put in the work and have been given the ability, so I’m just grateful for any advantage I have at this point. It does really suck that affirmative action works this way, but when the acceptance rate is projected to be 3%, I’ll use any advantage I can get. Good luck to you all

Hmmmmm, I like moist and delicious cakes…but I’m hard and dry though

Yes, many stupid students get into ivies at my school since they’re minorities. Take that however you will.

Even if you were referring to kids at your school, that was very rude! Many stupid people also make idiotic comment on forums that can be viewed by thousands and traced back to the individual through emails. Take that how YOU will.

I cannot tell if you are serious but considering this is CC, it must be legitimate.
Try adding more oil to enrich the moisturizing process.
OR are you talking about how your URM is rather unappealing to 99.7% of the population?
