How often do college students have to go grocery shopping?

Trying to figure out how much time/how often I have to plan things like that into my schedule.

How often? once a week, once every 2 weeks? I'm having a meal plan, so most food will be on campus- at least for lunch and dinner. Maybe not breakfast, because I don't eat enough for breakfast for it to be worth taking 1 meal off my account (my school has a thing where it takes 1 meal off your account, and it's an all-you-can-eat deal)

My mom goes to a grocery store almost EVERY DAY!! And I am SO NOT doing that! She'll go to Super Target because she likes x items there, then to Byerlys because she like x item there, then somewhere else...like 4 places in a week! That is not going to be me, in college or on my own after that. One place, probably once a week, get it all, get it done. She'll also spend 1-2 hours in each place. Whenever I have to go to Target to pick up groceries for her, I'm done in SO much less time than she is!

Sorry that go to be kind of a rant about that...back to the question!

Oh, yeah,…I know it depends how much you eat too.

But on average…for the typical student who has a good meal plan as I mentioned…how often?

I just go to the store when I’m running low, so about once every 2-3 weeks, depending on the specific food items I have.

Your mom could get it all done sooner . Like me , I stretch it out ,because I have LOTS of free time . Your mom and I do more " Recreational " shopping . ( I am empty nest mom ) For YOU ,once a week is about all you need to do .

I plan on getting a meal plan. So,anytime i feel like getting snacks or drinks for the fridge in the dorm. So not often.

I rarely went grocery shopping because of my meal plan. Maybe I’d hit up a grocery store every couple of weeks to get fresh fruits and other things I couldn’t get in the dining halls. A lot of colleges have convenience stores that sell grocery items too.

Just go whenever you run out. No need to plan for everything (because chances are, the plan isn’t going to stay).

Yeah you don’t need a plan. Just do it whenever.

I just have to have an idea of if I’m going to go weekly, or more than that. Similar to my other thread about how often college students do laundry. I have to have plans. I’m not a go-with-the-flow type of person. I’ve literally written out schedules of when I’m doing homework or major projects for classes, even in high school. It works for me.

I did once per semester and I’m going to continue to do that for my next 3 ears.

I would spend ~$160 but go all out (drinks, musclemilk, food, snacks, etc) for the fall semester and then do the same for spring. The food only lasted about a month and there’s roughly 4 months in a semester but it still does the trick. If you’re smart, you can make it last all 4 months.

Actually, I’m coming back a day early so I can go to the local Kmart and buy food, items for dorm, etc.

I went about twice a month, and I was cooking /all/ of my meals.

Twice a week, but it’s convenient for me as I have a couple grocery stores between my school and apartment. I usually get enough for four meals and eat out the rest of the time.

I got food (I.e. Gatorade, Ramen, Poptarts and Soup) like twice a semester. Maybe.

Well last year I was a freshman and lived on campus…so I had to waste about 1800 dollars on a meal plan. With access to that I was going to walmart for snacks about once a month. Not sure if i’ll get a meal plan this year now that I have a choice.
