I might possibly be interested in double majoring in Econ should I get accepted into the commerce school. How feasible is this? I know it depends on the capability of the student and all that but is this unheard of or frequent at the Com school?

Not terribly hard if you plan in advance. Why would you do this?

i thought most ppl either choose comm or econ, i dont know of anyone who is doing both. plus, i also thought comm takes over your schedule (the ice block and all - i had a bathroommate last year in comm and she only had 1 elective per semester it seemed, not enough to do a double major?).

many commerce students also major or minor in econ for the simple reason that they've likely taken several econ classes already and it doesn't take much to at least minor or even major.

Its actually pretty easy to do because the econ major only requires 30 credits, four of which are stat. Econ 201, 202 and Stat are pre-reqs for the comm school. So you only have to take 7 more classes to complete the Econ major. If you knock three (or preferably four) out second year its not too tough to fit the last three or four into your schedule once you matriculate into the comm school.

Its actually pretty common.

holla9: that's what I figured looking at the requirements for the Econ major, but I was thinking maybe I missed something.

cav: You question makes it sound like a bad idea. I'm sure one learns important, valuable skills in the Com school but part of me is also eager to study an actual academic subject, and I've recently became interested in economics through reading various books and blogs.

All of this is presumptuous on my part anyway as I don't even attend U.Va yet and stand, at best, a 10% chance of getting in to the Com school straight from NVCC. We'll see though!

Thanks for the replies.

im doing double.

comm and econ. a lot of fun.
