I want a school with access to a big city, and I was wondering how often you guys go to Philly and New York (I love philly, I've never been to new york). Is it a rare occurence or do some people do it every weekend?

Usually when I hear of kids going to New York City, it is on special occasions. There’s a purpose – like maybe a project where they have to go to the museum or see a play, or visiting a friend at college, or going to a concert or club. If they go several times, it is probably because of an internship. It costs $20.00 round-trip. The length of time between New Brunswick and NYC varies by the time of day. On average though, it take about 70 minutes.

Me personally, I’ve taken the train from NB to NYC only 4 times this whole year – three times to go home and once because of a concert.

Don’t know too much about Philly (sorry!).

people go to nyc & philly often, but i wouldn’t say every weekend since it’s getting quite pricey. especially with the increase of the price of train tix from $17.75 to $24.00, i believe. getting to nyc is pretty easy from new bruns, and the express trains take 48 minutes which is pretty nice. mushaboom is right though, it can take up to 70 min. philly’s a little more tricky to get to without a car. you can get there by taking the train to metropark and taking an amtrak or going to trenton and taking whatever takes you to philly from there (not really sure which trains, i have a vague understanding of it)

Art majors go to NYC quite frequently for museum exhibits and to visit friends at other schools. Again, cost is a factor.

^ Yeah, cost does suck. I’d LOVE to go to NYC every weekend when at school, but paying a little over $20.00 round-trip four times a month will leave my pockets empty. I live less than 30 minutes from the city, so the fare is naturally cheaper, which is why $20 seems too much for me =(

Also, you have to take into account the money you probably will have to spend when in the city (like subway or cab fare if your destination is quite away from Penn Station)

exactly although people have access to the train station not many people are willing to spend 20 plus bucks to go for a weekend so people just settle for them signature rutgers parties. also in general people are too lazy to go.
