How personal is too personal?

How personal is too personal for a college essay? Like, what if something has really shaped me as a person but it's not something I would discuss over dinner, even with my CLOSEST closest friends.

It depends. If you’re doing something like coming out for the first time in your essay, then that’s fine (provided you’re comfortable writing about it). But if you write something about how you’re a Hitler-loving, racist, misogynist person at heart, you might want to try something else. If you want to PM me with specifics, I could probably be more helpful.

Pretend that you’re addressing a stranger who’s willing to listen to you–that is your audience. Don’t say anyting you wouldn’t say to that stranger in person. So I wouldn’t reveal any personal secrets.

Essay experts often provide an example or two of deeply personal essays that really worked. I’d use some caution, though - as with humor, be sure you can really pull it off. A bad attempt might be worse than something more conventional.

Here’s the thing. This thing is something that someone would discuss with a therapist or a counselor. Too far? It’s definitely not comedic.

i would pick something else. or actually GO to a therapist and ask for their opinion on if they think that it would be appropriate or not. and make sure it’s not disgusting–you want to touch their hearts, not their stomachs.

Stay away from anything too personal. Since you don’t know who will do the reading, you’re setting yourself up. They want to get to know you…but only to a point. They aren’t your shrink or your parent, or your religious person (rabbi, priest, deacon), or your sib. it’s as much about your writing as it is about the topic. Focus on making a boring topic interesting, instead of making an interesting topic boring.

Whether you know your professors well or not, providing a resume will allow them to write the best possible recommendation for you. The brief resume should include your best qualifications, whether that be classes, internships, work experience, personal interest in the field, awards earned, or anything else that will allow the recommender to provide concrete details to your prospective graduate school. You may also want to include a copy of your grades if they are good.Along with the resume, provide a letter that details why you are pursuing a graduate school education. Provide information on the programs to which you are applying as well as your long-term goals after you have graduated. This allows the professors to match what they say in their letter to what you have said in the rest of your application, which can help create a positive impression for the committee considering your application. Some professors will ask you to write a sample recommendation letter. If asked, do it! The professor may well use your letter as a draft or even put the letter you wrote on stationery and send it as is. This makes life easy for the professor and provides you with an unparalleled opportunity for a good recommendation that highlights your strengths and complements the rest of your application.
