how popular is pre-dentistry

yes thats what i thought..and thats why i asked some college that has the program...

dnduswo,

Why would you want to limit your options so much by majoring in something that few schools offer anyway? You're how old? 17? 18? You're likely to change career paths down the line, and if you end up with a degree in "pre-dentistry," you've limited your post graduate options a bit more than if you have a more open ended degree (in say bio or chem.)

ok..........................
i thought pre-dent degree would be very critical for dent school....

Not in the least bit. Just like medical school, law school, and business school, no particular major is "critical" for admissions. As long as your grades are high and you complete all your pre-reqs for admissions, you're golden.

By the way, I did find a school that offers pre-dentistry as a major: Ohio University.

Do schools with a "College Of Dentistry" or "School of Dentistry" offer predent major? If so, then does UCLA offer predent?

No, UCLA does not offer pre-dent, pre-med, pre-law, pre-business, or pre-anything majors.

doesnt it offer all the pre- major?

CONFUSIIOONNNNNN

what about UCSD? So if i were to go to UCLA/UCSD, id pick chem or something?

It has no majors that have anything "pre-" attached to it.

Look for yourself.

I just checked the NYU website, and couldn't find Dentistry at all anywhere, and that's my dream school. If I went to NYU and got a degree in say... something like software engineering, but I completed prereqs for dentistry, then would that be looked down upon by dentistry schools?(is it even possible to complete prereq's for dentistry while taking an IT major?)

MAJOR IN WHATEVER YOU WANT. Just make sure to complete the courses that the dental/medical/law/business schools you plan on apply to require. It's that simple. No "pre-" major required.

UCSD I think has a pre-med and pre-law program that isn't a major, but a sort of boot camp for getting yourself prepared for admissions. You still take a regular major as far as I know.

that makes absoletly no sense.

why would someone major in like political science and at the same time, complete the units for predent?

why not just do predent or chem to begin with? maybe im just REALLY confused and NO NOTHING about the college process.

Omeone please answer my question:

Holy crap. You guys need it straight from the horse's mouth. Read the section entitled "major."

Or better yet, here it is, copied and pasted:

"Although most applicants major in biology or chemistry, the school does not consider other major fields in any way unacceptable. In fact, it may look upon students majoring in other subject areas as perhaps more well rounded intellectually, and prepared to deal with the diverse aspects of a people-oriented professional career. Applicants who select non-science majors should complete at least one science course each quarter or semester to keep attuned to the specific disciplines required in scientific training."

Does that answer your questions, guys?

quote
I'm pretty sure you could. But make sure to discuss this with an advisor to see how difficult it may be.

Ok thanks Uclari. And 1 more thing:
dammit I forget, but I'll post it as soon s I remember...

why would someone major in like political science and at the same time, complete the units for predent?
Because they enjoy political science. I know a guy at Boalt (Berkeley) Law School who majored in physics. Why? He enjoyed it.
why not just do predent or chem to begin with?
Well, since predent is extremely rare, it's hard to major in it to begin with.

Why major in chem if you don't particularly find it fulfilling? Your GPA will drop, and then you're worse off than if you just had majored in something you enjoyed.

so i can major in political science but still do the required courses to go to dental school?

example #1 thats odd about the college education.

i say if you want to major in pre-dent, major in it. Your major does NOT determine your career. However, i really think it would be smart to study something you like in college, and major in whatever your passion is. You're never going to get a chance like this again, and you might as well since you only go to college once.

Why not? You can take any classes you want outside of your major. College is NOT high school.

True. But there is the problem of actually finding a school that offers the major. It's exceedingly rare. I wouldn't choose a school based on that major.

Especially since you can always major in something else and just take all the classes anyway.
