How prestigious and useful is MUN or Model Congress?

My school offers both MUN and Model Congress, and we go to NYU’s MUN conference as well as the Rutger’s MUN conference. Can those with experience answer these questions for me?

If I am just an average student and my school wins Best Delegation, how good does that look for me?

If I am looking into a Science major for college, how valuable is MUN for me? Would it make me look bad because my extracurriculars are all over the place?

In general, since so many people go to MUN, how prestigious is it for the average student?

  1. MUN is valuable on an app pretty much only if you win best delegate/OD/HM. For all the college knows you could have done nothing in committee, your school could still win best delegation.
  2. MUN is not only about politics, it's a very valuable leadership activity that colleges look highly upon. If you do good in MUN and can show for it, it presents you as a great leader and speaker. Your extracurriculars should have a clear focus (e.g science would do Science Olympiad, Science Bowl, etc.) but it is good to have some diversity as well to present the "well-rounded" image.
  3. It is prestigious if you show that you are a very capable delegates and have won awards. Just being in MUN does have some merit but ultimately means nothing when choosing you over another applicant if you don't win an award.
