I plan to go on to grad school in English, so I wondered if Rice is very strong in that major?

Dr. Huston and Dr. Doody have been singled out for praise over the years. I’ve never heard a word about any weak departments at Rice … strong faculty/bright students mix well. Rice’s grad school placement across the board is very strong, Austerity.

Doctor Huston is incredible! He came to speak at Hanszen yesterday - he taught the mother of one of my freshmen and actually remembered her.

As for the initial question, one famous alum is Larry McMurtry. We also have one professor, Justin Cronin, who has had a supersupergood book on the bestseller list for something like a year. And I know many people who have gotten into creative writing graduate schools.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t know before that Justin Cronin was a Rice Professor.

a chance to see the venerable Professor Huston in action!

Dr. Huston is absolutely outstanding. He’s a Hanszen associate and often eats lunch in our servery, so I have had several lunches with him already. I cannot wait to take a class with him soon.

As a side note, I know several of Dr. Huston’s students in the video Ottoline just posted, and all of them would confirm how amazing he is in a heartbeat. There are several other outstanding faculty members in the English department here, too.

@silentsailor - Is your freshman at Hanszen, I’m guessing? If so I very well might know him/her! haha

@FallenAngel9 yes! And if you’re a Hanszen freshman you probably also know me. Ha.
