I never had any such thing in HS that was tacitly accepted as acceptable. But where we live here they apparently do TWO of them!
Now my current senior already knows she cannot to the Monday after prom one because she plays varsity lacrosse and THAT will not fly. She said the seniors last year absolutely showed for school and practice.
At my D’s school last year the seniors were prohibited from organizing a skip day. So instead, they organized a “bring your pet to school” day. Most seniors who participated were begrudgingly sent home early.
That day marks the first time my D had a class with a chicken.
Our HS Senior Skip Day got co-opted by administration to be Senior Picnic Day… And yes, toomanyteens, it doesn’t matter because varsity starters never get a day off in season. But I don’t think my kids would have wanted it any other way.
Senior skip day is a venerable tradition that goes back several generations at my old high school and at my son’s. The schools are on opposite sides of the country so it’s not a regional thing. Part of the tradition is that the principal sends out a huffy memo to parents declaring that such a thing will not be tolerated.
I can understand why students would rebel and schedule a second senior skip day if the administration tried to torpedo it by scheduling an impossible to skip official one.
My son, along with the other seniors in the orchestra, went to school on senior skip day for an important concert rehearsal then checked out “sick” immediately afterwards. You’ve never seen such a clean cut and earnest group of delinquents. For many of them it was their only high school experience of being a scofflaw. They were so proud it was adorable.
The seniors at my high school had a cut day which really meant you didn’t bring it up with your parents just went to the beach. My mom was mad at me when she found out after because I went to a private school so I was wasting her $. My kids wanted me to actually excuse them for senior skip day (call attendance office and say they were sick). I refused. I think they actually went to school but they were on sports teams so their coaches were happy (I think you got benched if you skipped class before a game).
My dd had senior skip day…in our school district you are only allowed so many missed days so I said to make sure you are not missing too many days otherwise i will just look the other way.
It was around when I was in HS and most of us participated.
D’s school had a rule about no more than 2 absences second semester senior year or you had to take exams, so no skip day.
At S’s magnet school almost everyone skipped. Principal sent an email about it basically saying just know where your child is ( I knew mine was at the beach with his friends). I just laughed.
Here in Minnesota, the schools acquiesce by providing a holiday like day at the local amusement park, zoo, etc.in place of the skip day.
its always bothered me. I think thats worse. I skipped a day as a senior, but the state didn’t pay for my entertainment.
Another interesting tidbit. At our school about 25% of seniors fulfill their grad requirements by the end of first semester. These guys could skip the whole second semester if they wanted too, but few do. For them to participate in senior skip day is doubling down on the stupidity.
We had two senior skip days - one in the fall semester and one in the spring. Many high school seniors have just one. On my first skip day in the fall, I hung out at a friend’s house with some other friends and played video games and board games. We were within 10 miles of the school, lol. On the second one, my long-term boyfriend took me to visit the college I had committed to in the fall.
I still graduated with honors and participated in many activities. Skipping school for two days isn’t the end of the world.
My HS had a senior skip day “back in the day.” So, my class of roughly 400 kids decided our junior year that we would have “Junior Skip Day” one fine spring day and go hang out at a local riverfront park. Needless to say, it did NOT go over well with the public school administrators, and one guidance counselor took it upon herself to call every parent in the junior class. And, yet, I don’t think a single parent even cared.
My kids kept telling me it was Senior skip day. I swear they said it at least 5 times. I told them if it was skip day, they should skip and take the consequences. What, I wouldn’t excuse them?? NO, the point of skip day is to skip, otherwise it would be called Parent Excused Day.
One had athletic duties and couldn’t miss (even with an excuse) and the other wasn’t really a joiner so I don’t think either ever went to an organized or unorganized skip day.
Once it is sanctioned by the school, senior skip day loses its meaning. At that point, I think the seniors need to schedule a second one as a matter of principle.
