I discovered College Confidential a few months ago
and found some very good resources for SAT and college admission as well.

However, I was also questioning how trustworthy are the forums being posted here.
They all seem very reliable to me, but I also wanted to hear from the others
who have been around this website for longer than me.

Thanks!

Just remember to go directly to school’s websites and/or call admissions to get answers to IMPORTANT questions. I have seen incorrect answers posted on CC. On the other hand, it has a wealth of combined knowledge and experience.

Much of the information dispensed on CC is coming from other high school seniors. Some is accurate, some is not. Some of these high schoolers are self proclaimed experts on everything from what it takes to get admitted to top colleges to what future employers expect from their job applicants. Much of their information is based on what they have “heard” from other 17 year olds.

If you are looking for factual information, go to the schools’ websites. If you are looking for opinions, then consult CC.

I think CC is most useful for the discussion in aggregate - the discussions can help you frame the issues in a new way, give you ideas you hadn’t considered, help you see something from another perspective, provide insight into something you were feeling but couldn’t articulate. Overall, I agree with urbanparent.

Always consider the source of whatever information you read, and “trust but verify” by double-checking it against unbiased sources. A lot of people posting are just regular parents or students, not CC staff or moderators with professional experience in college admissions, testing, and so on. Having said that, I have found a lot of great and reliable information on this site, and people are pretty quick to provide useful links or correct misleading statements.

Thank you for all your replies. As for me, I was looking for opinions so I guess CC is a good fit for me! As for the other facts about actual admission process, I know that I am not going to depend on others who post here, but go look for it myself, so I do not think there are any concerns regarding false information about the colleges themselves. Again, thank you all for your answers!

It’s also really up to whoever is posting the information. Like for example, I’ve been here for enough time that I learn to trust anything posted by Waverly or T26E4 (among others here of course).
