Eg. Do you always clean on the same day of the week? Grocery shop on the same day of the week? Do laundry the same day of the week? That sort of thing. Or are you more of a, “Oh - we’re out of food/have no clean clothes/I see dust so I need to do something about that now,” kind of person?
I generally have certain days allocated for certain tasks, but sometimes I think I am too regimented about that. Today, I would normally go buy groceries but we seem to have an inordinate amount of leftovers right now, so I am delaying that until tomorrow after we clear out some space in the fridge tonight. For some reason, I feel like a slacker because I am not going to the store today.
I live within walking distance of 3 grocery stores. Prior to the pandemic I would do a big shopping once every couple of weeks and then go every couple of days to get fresh fruits veggies and chicken/meat. Once the pandemic hit I only grocery shopped once per week at the most and many times only once every 10 days. Now my routine is to shop on Tuesday mornings (this is a wfh day so I just take my lunch early to shop).
I normally do the wash on Mondays when I’m WFH. Since our home is small I can get it cleaned in a couple of hours during the weekend.
Great question! I was like this for many years especially after I went back in the paid workforce. It was just easier for me to spread chores out over the week rather than wait until the weekend.
My recent move disrupted my routine but I’m working on it.
Hardly ever. The only thing I do pretty religiously on the same day is I water my houseplants on Sunday. Often will vacuum one day on the weekend. Everything else is catch as catch can. But I’m also still working full time.
Actually, no routine for me. Husband goes to farmers market, Whole Foods, and grocery every Sunday so I only shop during the week when I need stuff he didn’t buy.
I generally grocery shop on Thursday evenings (so I don’t have to spend time on my precious weekend doing it), and the bedsheets get changed on Sundays. I seem to always be doing laundry, so the question is really what day DON’T I do that one? Everything else happens (or doesn’t, LOL) as it needs attention.
I tried several different methods early on, but the one that works best for me is to clean everything on Sunday, or Saturday-Sunday if the weekend is light on activities. Must do each week cleaning is de-cat hairing the house (chom chom and vacuum all carpets and hardwood/tile), bathrooms and laundry. I usually do 1-2 loads mid week, but they stay folded in baskets by the washer until Sunday night. We also do the main weekly grocery shop trip on Sunday and have the meals planned for the week.
This way everything was clean & ready to go come Monday morning. Everything was too crazy during the week to get it done. Any extra cleaning happens as time allows usually on the weekends too.
It many ways it was hard when the kids were home because free time was so short. And things got dirtier faster. But, it was easier because I also had the kids to help!
Trash has to go on certain days. Cleaners now come every other week. Everything else changes as needed. I never run out of stuff as I keep a huge pantry which includes CVS type things like over the counter meds, toothpaste etc. I buy most of the pantry stuff online in bulk.
Husband and I alternate groceries and bathroom cleaning, and they usually happen on Saturday or close to then, unless we have other activities planned. I usually change our sheets Thursday or Friday, so do a wash on warm load then. My husband does his laundry every couple of days (used to be every day for running stuff and it drove me crazy). I do all the other laundry on flexible schedule. I usually vacuum at least once a week and husband mops the floors a little less regularly. Rest of chores are “as needed” which may not agree with some people’s definition
I worked an irregular schedule (hospital work) and aside from being straight day shift in the last decade, nothing was ever reliable. In retirement, thinking of a regular schedule is appealing, but there always is something different going on, guests, trips, medical appointments.
A long haired cat makes many parts of cleaning essential and low tolerance for buildup on floors tends to drive cleaning. Dusting…well, guests, only. Depending on the task, routines vary from compulsive to lax.
I was just thinking about this the other day. I haven’t worked in almost 20 years. I could do the laundry any day of the week, but I still do it on weekends for some reason.
My mil retired from teaching over 20 years ago. She STILL goes to the grocery store on Saturdays which is something I don’t understand at all. I get that old habits die hard, but when you can go to the store any day of the week - why choose the weekend??
