Is there a problem with campus safety at UConn? What is the police presence like there? I've tried to research the issue online but haven't really come up with anything.

And what is the school's "tolerance" of underage drinking/partying etc. I only ask these questions because I have heard some negatives in these areas. Not that these aren't issues at pretty much every school, but some schools obviously are worse than others.

ha ha funny - I'm glad it's safe from natural disasters. How about unnatural?
I'm serious because Ive had a PM from someone stating there are drive by's, computer thefts and lots of drinking. Just trying to corroborate. Not trying to be a "tool".

Drivebys? In Storrs? Not a chance. There is a lot of drinking, but things are hardly unsafe. I've never heard of computer thefts around here, and though I'm sure it happens, it probably happens with no more frequency than at any other school (less, if anything). A few simple precautions will prevent that.

A few weeks ago, there were a couple of (non-students) that broke into one of the apartments and found an unlocked room whose occupants were asleep; they took a few things, but one of the students woke up, noticed, and called the police; the thieves were apprehended and arrested.

This is without a doubt, exceedingly rare, and much more likely to happen in a city than in Storrs. Also, it could easily have been prevented if the students of the room had locked their door at night.

Finally, there was the huge thing about Carlee Wines' death due to a drunk driver. UConn police are now starting to set up DUI checkpoints on weekend nights at various points around campus. A couple weeks ago, I know they caught 2 or 3 drunk drivers, so this will not only keep people safer, it will discourage people from drinking and driving in the first place.

All in all, I feel extremely safe in Storrs. I honestly don't worry about anything, including walking around and outside campus in the middle of the night. And I do this frequently for midnight Subway meals and food runs at Store 24 (a 24-hour convenience store).

Thanks Goldshadow, this is very good information. That's what I was speaking to regarding 'tolerance' of drinking, etc. I know it happens everywhere, but its good to know it is being addressed, especially in light of the death that occurred.

The computer theft was a few years ago; two members of the men's basketball team (Marcus Williams and AJ Price if I remember correctly) stole 11 laptops, tried to sell them in a pawn shop, got recognized and arrested. So not really an ongoing issue...

I don't think drinking is more or less than any other school with one stipulation. In a city, there's other stuff to do. At Uconn, it's not like there's absolutely nothing to do, but you'd have to be cool with on-campus activities. I mean I think a lot more people tend to spend Saturday nights drinking because there aren't that many other options.
