How southern is virginia tech?

do a lot of southerners go to the school? or are the majority from the northern states?

A lot of people are from Va Beach or NoVa, which aren’t traditional southern areas at all.

In short, yes. But its very diverse. There are people from everywhere in Va as well as northern states. Most out of state people i know are from NC or PA. Im from FL. There are also a ton of international students.

This is on the VT website [Freshman Snapshot | Undergraduate Admissions | Virginia Tech](http://www.admiss.vt.edu/apply/snapshot.php)

Top 5 home states of out-of-state freshmen (for 2008 freshman class):

Maryland, 561 students
Pennsylvania, 249 students
New Jersey, 246 students
North Carolina, 183 students
New York, 84 students

Virginia Tech is not very southern at all, but the surrounding area is. The vast majority of the students come from: Northern Virginia, Virginia Beach, and Richmond. Now richmond actually ends up with a few people who are “kind-of” southern, in that they might have a slight accent and identify with traditional southern culture, but they are by no means a stereotype. If you’re looking for southern culture here you can easily find it, but it’s by no means a “Southern” school.
