How strict is campus police?

I'm an incoming freshman and I was wondering how strict are ND's campus police on dorm parties? I have a friend there who says that the SBPD are cracking down on the off campus parties but he didn't really say anything about parties in the dorms. I'm not a worrying kind of guy but I just want to know how careful I have to be, I'm going on a AROTC scholarship and a drinking ticket would mean the end of an Army career for me. Please don't say something like "the best way is not to drink at all" because I chose not to go the West Point route so I could have the college experience (and that I've been a lifetime ND fan) but I just wanted to gauge the situation. Thanks for any advice.

It’s now been five years since I was a freshman :frowning: but in my experience, they’re generally pretty tolerant of drinking in the dorms, especially in guys’ dorms. You can usually get away with whatever, and they’ll almost always look the other way on underage beer drinkers, but if you want to be extra careful, you could avoid the bigger offenses (drinking games, hard alcohol, etc). Just make sure you don’t drink so much you land in the hospital (which, you know, is a good policy anyway…) and make sure you don’t bring beer into the hallways. I know several ROTC kids who drank their fair share throughout college, so you should be fine as long as you aren’t stupid about it.

Ok, it just seems like most kids I know in college (not just ND) have gotten a ticket at one point or another. Would it be that hard to go 4 years without one?

It’s definitely easier to get away with in guys dorms. I don’t think it’s that hard to go your 4 years without a ticket. From my experience (from South Bend with lots of friends at ND), the police rarely break up dorm parties. And even if they do, they’ll just tell everyone to leave and the people who live in the room will either get a warning, or in rare and extreme cases, a fine. They really don’t even care that much if it’s just beer—it’s a $50 dollar fine at most. Out of the 40ish kids I know though, only 1 has ever even been res-lifed, and that was because she couldn’t even walk on her own. One of the police actually caught me peeing on a bush once, and was just like…“You need to leave”, but I didn’t get in trouble or anything.
tl;dr, they’re not that bad on campus when it comes to dorm parties. But only go to off-campus parties if you know the house owners and it’s a small-ish party. Too risky otherwise.

The NDSP (campus police) are not who you really need to worry about. Drinking in dorms is commonplace and will not be dealt with by police unless you are absolutely out of control. It is the South Bend PD and even worse Indiana Excise Police (basically the state alcohol cops) who are the biggest *******s. Every year at the beginning of the year a bunch of off-campus parties get busted and they will haul kids off to jail for underage drinking.

Long story short, drinking in campus dorms is not usually a police matter. Drinking off campus and having off-campus parties is where some people end up getting a ticket or arrested.

I agree with everything stated. Off campus parties are left to the South Bend police who really don’t care that you are a student and want to have a good time. They will bust loud parties and arrest minors. However, if you are on campus, you can do pretty much anything, just nothing that is super loud. Additionally, if you go crazy in a dorm party and you need to go to the hospital, then you can get a ticket. But as long as you know your limit, don’t have alcohol in the hallway and are not making a huge noise, you should be fine.
