How strict is Rice about grades?

My senior friend applied to Duke ( Near perfect grades with 1 B in senior year, went to Governor’s school, high SAT, president of +5 clubs)

…and got rejected

He emailed them and asked why he got rejected, they responded regarding his transcript and his single ‘B’ in his senior year.

Is rice this uptight about grades? I got about 7 -A’s during 8th, 9th, and 10th grades combined but straight A’s junior and probably senior year too. Will I even be given a chance? GPA is around 4.35-4.4

Not that I don’t believe you, but I’m having a difficult time believing your friend. I would be very surprised if any AO would say such a thing.

If Rice (or any peer college) were to reject an applicant, I highly doubt one B would be the reason.

Your friend’s story sounds like fake news.

I don’t know what to say. He is going to UVa now. But how strict are Rice admissions?

Asked and answered. No application will be thrown into the trash. GPA is but one portion of the application.

Funny how “selective” becomes “uptight” when the numbers turn against you.

7 A’s in 3 yr combined? forget about 8th grade, do you get 4 As in Fr and So years? it is below 3.5 GPA UW. how can you GPA pushed to 4.35? all APs?

@lemonlulu I think you misunderstood. I am a straight A student with the exception of 7 A minuses (-A) that I accumulated throughout 8th 9th and 10th grade combined. (I have to count middle school because I took high school courses there). an - A = 3.7 on the 4.0 scale so idk how you think I have below a 3.5…

Will your application be considered? Yes. Will you get in? Maybe. Maybe not.

Grades you receive I the 8th grade, even if they are in a HS GPA, will be a factor very close to zero for all colleges. Colleges are most concerned with 9th grade on (and for a few, 10th grade on). Don’t sweat it.

To be fair to the responder, your post was not clear. The standard way to write “A minus” is “A-” I’ve never seen “-A” before.

On this site, you are better off talking UW GPA. There is no standard weighting in US high schools, so outside of your HS, weighted GPA means little.

@Student1928 , OK, i got your GPA, but I don’t think it makes sense to include 8th grade HS level. You can ask you HS include the credit in transcript but there would not be GPA counted. It is your choice to take HS credit in MS. Do you expect Rice count your AP grade As to UG GPA? you already have 4.35 GPA, how does 8th grade result push your GPA to 4.38 or 4.42 make a difference?
