Hello, I am new to college confidential as I heard many good things about it. I am currently a high school senior with a 1460 SAT and a 33 ACT, as well as an 800 math 2c score. I want to go to rice for computer science. My family is fairly low income (<20k) and I live near the Austin area. Rice has been my #1 dream school for years but I know it is a far reach for me. I lived in california for 2 years, where the curriculum and competition was much harder than here in texas, and because of that on my transcript it shows that I didn’t do that well my freshman year. But since then I’ve had almost all A’s with a few B’s here and there. But my rank is 182/580 and my unweighted gpa is 3.2 and my weighted gpa out of 6 is 4.545 (my school calculates gpa based off the percent, so like a 100 is a 6.0, 99 is a 5.9, etc) I have taken 3 ap’s (ap lang, apush, and aphug) and i’m currently enrolled in the aps: calc bc, english lit, chem, macro econ, psych, gov, compsci, and physics C. and i’ve taken /currently taking every engineering + compsci class my school has. I am enrolled in a handful of extracurriculars, ranging from robotics for the past 5 years, student council, UIL mathematics and science, and I started a chess club and a cube club where I teach students how to solve rubik’s cubes. I have visited Rice and it only solidified my determination for wanting to get in, and I emphasized my dreams to get in on my essays. I know that I will most likely not in, but what are my chances of acceptance? (if i have any of course). Any feedback/insight is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much and I hope that you all have a lovely day
your extracurricular and subject tests seem good but a 3.2 gpa will hold you back. A 33 ACT isin’t a boost either…
I’d say you have a 10/90 shot, maybe a bit lower. A reach but not impossible if you right fantastic essays and emphasise your extracurriculars maybe…?
You won’t get in if you don’t apply. Go for it! Rice values demonstrated interest and students that can articulate why Rice is the right fit for them. Rice is trying to increase its number of low income applicants by offering full scholarships through the Rice Investment. https://financialaid.rice.edu
Good luck but hopefully you are applying to a mix of schools!
Apply and find out. Odds of doing are always better than wondering.
