Comparatively, Dartmouth have fewer alums than the other Ivies due to the size of its student body. So I was wondering, is it relatively easy to find alums who are willing to help you after you graduate?

I think the network is very close knit. The day I got admitted ED in December, I received an invitation to attend the Christmas party of the alumni group in our area, first via email followed by a personal phone call from an alumnus. How cool is that! Being made to feel one of them already. :)

My husband went to Dartmouth and has played rugby with D alums for years. Dartmouth has a really really tight alum group. My son was accepted ED this year and got a similar invitation as SimpleTruth. When we walked into the room, I already knew about half a dozen people from my husband's era; my son already knew about three people because they were a few years ahead of him in HS. It felt like family right off the bat. It was an amazing evening!

I probably hang out with 10-15 Dartmouth alums at every weekend. My firm started with one Dartmouth alum as a partner, now about 50% of new hires are from Dartmouth. We go out of our way to look out for each other.

I haven't personally experienced it yet, but I've heard great things about our alumni network.

When I was looking for an internship last year, I stopped by Career Services and looked up alumni in my area and read a description of their current job. They also provided their contact information so it was easy to get in touch.

ALSO, I got this amazing blitz (e-mail) the other day. The blitz encourages seniors to attend the Backpack to Briefcase series. Here's a copy:

Last year I applied for an internship at a competitive firm (acceptance rate, less than one in ten). I knew a Dartmouth '00 who was working there, and who had got the internship as a student. I sent him an e-mail introducing myself, and asked if he had any advice for getting my foot in the door.

Ten minutes later he replied. "When do you want to start?"

He had hired me, not knowing me, but only knowing that I was a Dartmouth student.

The Dartmouth alumni network is amazing. As a Club Officer, every February we are invited to the college, expenses paid, for a wonderful weekend learning about what other Clubs do and how to improve. We learn about what is going on at the college, dine with students, listen to faculty and adminstrators and feel in touch with our alma mater. I too received a huge break as a first year law student when I was hired for a position traditionally filled by second year students b/c my interviewer went to Dartmouth and we hit it off. You can be anywhere in the world and if an alum sees you with a Dartmouth shirt on, they will speak to you. Don't underestimate what it means to be part of the "Dartmouth family." What I like most is that it bridges generations, genders, ethnicities, backgrounds, religions, etc. I have some fine friends through my alumni work who are older than my parents yet we share a lot.
