How strong is UGA’s SPIA, International Affairs, E. Asian Area Studies, Chinese & Japanese Language depts?

For those in it (or their parents), what do you most like / dislike about it?

Are there any special opportunities associated with them?

How close to professionally fluent can you get just from taking the UGA Chinese and Japanese classes on campus? Meaning how strong are the 4th year/advanced classes?

I’m a ‘91 UGA grad in Poli Sci. The guy who started SPIA a few years ago is one of my old profs. Dr Loch Johnson is a leader in the field and a brilliant teacher. He modeled SPIA after Princeton and Georgetown. I think it is definitely worth a look.
