How the hell am I gonna afford NYU?

Hey guys Im thinking of applying to NYU CAS / Tandon. I plan to major in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science. My GPA is pretty good ( 4.29 weighted, 3.9 unweighted ) and my SAT is 1410/1600 ( might take again). I have a LOT of extra-curriculars like hackathons,internship,co-founded startup. My essays are also pretty good ( lots lots of work need to be done ).
So this is all good but the issue is my parents are from Germany and are not very wealthy. Our net income in our house hold is straight up less than < 30k. there’s no way I can afford NYU.

My question is: What type of financial aid can I expect to receive from NYU? I live with my parents, have no children, and have one sibling. I live in New Jersey ( Jersey City , very close to NYU ). My test score are pretty average so should I expect to receive any merit scholarships?
thanks

NYU is known for poor financial aid. It is likely not affordable. If you search the forum, there are many threads on this.

Not true @Sportsman88
I got great financial aid @billy2shoes
I received a Liberal Arts Program scholarship that pays for half of my tuition not including the additional scholarships from other organizations that I received. All in all, I pay around 10-20k per year for the next four years when attending NYU.

Also, some of those posts that talk bad about NYU’s financial aid are mostly from class of 2019 and below. I believe the class of 2021 had better financial support since I know many friends who got in but have received better financial aid than me.

For a family with a net income of less than $30K, even the reduced cost of $10-20K per year isn’t really doable.

Well of course, that’s where FAFSA comes in. @doschicos

Were those merit scholarships @nyu2018spring ? Were your grades average, as Billy says his are?

How much can you pay @billy2shoes ?

Many students receive federal grants that give even more money to those students. FAFSA also allows for students to receive a lot in unsubsidized loans rather than it being subsidized.

Yes those were merit, but I mean you’re applying to a somewhat prestigious school. You gotta have the grades if you want to get in @HRSMom

Looks like the OP is an international student from Germany and therefore not eligible for federal loans.

He said he lives in New Jersey. How can he be an international student in Germany and be in the states? @doschicos

Also, even if he is an international student, he can always apply for a student visa granting him eligible for many federal loans and grants. I have many international friends from South Korea who have done this. @doschicos

I don’t think the OP is an international student. The post says the parents are from Germany but the family lives in Jersey City. Perhaps the point about the parents was made to explain why they are not high earners (don’t speak English well, etc.)?

I personally don’t think NYU is worth it. I grew up at a time when NYU was the school rich Jewish and Italian parents sent the kids they didn’t want to send away to school to. Nobody dormed there when I was in school.

If his test scores increase, maybe some merit.

Thanks for the lesson @nyu2018spring. I know it is somewhat selective. (I went there.)

The problem is if your income is 30k, the merit and financial aid together may not meet OP’s need. Doesn’t sound like he can afford even $20k a year:(. And federal grants are limited to about $5k pell. Then about $5500 in subsidized loans. That is it for federal.

OP: apply and see what happens. Maybe you will get what you need. As long as you have alternatives, what’s to lose?

yes I agree with @HRSMom
You should just apply and see what they give you OP

Also check this see if you can get fee waivers to make your apps. It adds up!

@HRSMom my friend who is attending NYU right now got 75% of his financial aid in unsubsidized loans not including his merit scholarships. He was an international student who has a visa now and his family’s income is around 35k so I don’t really know if there is an exact cutoff from their office

If you are an US citizen, since you are low income, have you considered applying for Questbridge? Deadline to apply is one week from today.

NYU isn’t a partner school but many excellent colleges and universities are.

@nyu2018spring Do you pay $10k or $20k? Big difference.

Is that net after loans or including loans?

On merit aid, there is one standard for admission and an entirely different scale for merit aid. By definition most students admitted won’t be in the top echelon and qualify for merit aid.

You mention someone getting 75% in loans as if that is good. Do the math and post the total amount of loans. Now look up the amortization schedule to pay back those loans over 10 years, 15 years, and 30 years.

Unsubsidized loans are not federal aid. They are market rate loans, higher rates than I pay on my car loan:(

Be very careful to understand what the end loan payment total will be, and that you feel comfortable with it. Loans aren’t bad, but they can be pretty evil if you are not careful!

@Sportsman88 10k-20k as in it differs on my academics when attending NYU. As of currently, I’m paying around 10.2k per year but that can change due to my amazing ability to procrastinate. As for my friend, I do not know his exact aid, but he said his family doesn’t make a lot and that NYU provided a very substantial amount in order for him to attend. I also said 75% not including merit scholarships which he and ,I quote, said “was more than enough”.

Edit: sorry yes it’s including the loans
Edit 2 ( I should read your entire comment before replying, silly me): I’m sorry but I can’t give you exact calculations because I do not know my friends exact aid nor am I at liberty to say. All I’m saying is that NYU, in the past year, had given great financial aid, despite what people think of the school. Yes NYU is very expensive at first, but I think it’s kind of rude to judge a school based on its cost of attendance when many have received great financial aid. Yes, I am a little biased because I attend the school, but people need to realize the schools that accepted you want you, not just your money. So OP apply to NYU, if they give you great financial aid, great! Take it. If not, move on to a school that you can afford and be proud to be in!

I beg to differ
