How to Ace Literature

Nice, good job :)

Thanks for the advice lolcats!!

I did a practice test from the CB book today and got a 660..
The letting the questions teach you the passage is a great tip! I was able to understand most of the passages that way haha

If I do practice tests from Kaplan and review/study all the answer explanations will that help me increase my score 100pts? (I'm not in a rush..probably won't be taking this until spring 2009)

Thanks again for this post!

Yeah whenever you're confused by a passage just let the questions tell you what's going on. Don't keep re-reading it :P

I'm pretty sure you can work up to a 750+ if you work hard at Kaplan, and you can consistently score around there on the Kaplan tests. Good luck :)

Bump: some solid advices.

lolcats4: YOU ARE A GODSEND!

no problem, the least I can do to give back to CC :)

Thank you so much! I love you.

will prepping for the literature, even though im unsure whether i’ll take it, help to boost my CR?

How does the test compare to the AP English Language AP multiple choice test? Talking difficulty, that is.

^ Wondering the same things as the two previous posters :)

I’m hoping to increase my CR score by about 50 points. I’m preparing for AP Eng Lang right now…and then preparing for SAT Lit after AP exams. And then practicing some more CR over the summer. I’m hoping all the work will pay off

I’m a bit confused about the title to this SAT II…it seems more similar to the AP English Language and Composition test MC, am I correct?

BUMP. this is amazing

It’s similar to AP lit multiple choice. But it’s 61-62 questions rather than 55 questions. So it’s harder.

cant wait til tomorrow, but still nervous

Invaluable information needs to be bumped.

Yes, it is very similar to AP Lang & Comp. Lit SAT II test itself is definitely harder though, it terms of dealing with literary terms and analysis in more depth.
I took Lit in November 2008, with somewhat studying and received a 590. I had no idea what I was doing/reading the entire time.
But I took it again in June 2009, with no studying at all this time, and received a 770. However it was after a year of AP Lang and Comp class.

yeah i dont understand the tricks to studying for the LIt test. I got a 690 on my CR, then took LIT first time no studying and scored a 780, but i really enjoy reading and can even understand poetry. that could play a big part in acing the test. i actually found all the stories interesting, finished the test in 40 min and napped for the last twenty. no clue… good luck though!

I’ve got a collegeboard book that includes all the subject tests from 1995, and I scored710 on the Lit test. I have one month to study, what do you guys estimate I could get? and how good a predictor is the Blue Book?

btw, OP you are amazing. Thank you for the info!

Hi. Thank you for the great guide. I am taking the English Literature test on October 9, 2010 and will utilize your tips from now on.

I got a 770 in the CR section on my SAT Reasoning Test. I used Kaplan’s book for it and loved it. Helped a lot.

Due to that, when it came to buying a book for the Subject Test, I chose Kaplan once again. Going by your post, seems to have been a good choice :-)

The Review section was particularly useful for me because the classes I’m taking didn’t prepare me for any of these literary terms (until I opened the Kaplan book, I didn’t even know what iambic pentameter meant). I finished studying from the Review and have started taking Practice tests now.

So far, I have taken 4 out of the 8 practice tests, and my scores have 720, 780, 760 and 720. I am kinda worried because I really want to score a great score on this.

I have heard that the Kaplan tests focus too much on literary terms and that the real test features very few of these questions. Is that true?

Also, any other help you can provide? Thanks in advance!

Do I really need to prepare/study for lit? I took a practice AP lit test once, timed, and got around 5 wrong… what score would this be on a real SAT II lit test? Also, what’s the curve like?
