How to actually memorize SAT words?

I have Direct hits for sat vocab, and the essential 500 vocabulary words, but I was wondering how you guys actually go about memorizing the words. Do you have any tricks? Flash cards? Do you just drill them? I find myself reading through these but it seems like I'm not retaining all of it. Thanks in advance.

For DH I just read the description and if I don’t want to, I repeatedly say the word aloud along with its definition. I also try to shorten the description or find hints within the word to help me remember. But mostly I repeatedly say the definition and word aloud, in different order. and the next day I review the words and learn new ones. the key is reviewing. that way youcant forget.

I’ve never tried this with SAT words, but you can use some sort of “cardbox” system (many Scrabble players including myself use this to practice anagramming). The main idea is very simple - you quiz yourself on a set of words, and ones that you get right are pushed further back, while ones you miss are kept high in the queue. The next day, you quiz yourself on the words that you missed yesterday, etc. This ensures that you focus on memorizing the words that you don’t know, while ones that you already know, without spending much time on ones you already do know.

Write stories using the words you’ve learned. Painfully bombastic stories.

Use the program Anki. It is a flashcard program that specifically times the intervals in which you see the word in order to maximize retention. Takes a little bit of getting used to, but nothing a teenager who isn’t completely oblivious to technology isn’t able to handle. It has helped me go through all of Direct Hits within a matter of a couple of weeks. It is a great program.

Thanks for posting on this. I am looking for a great way to study vocab

Anki is great. Quizlet is another great (and free) option.
