Tips for Memorizing SAT Vocab?

Hello fellow CC'ers! So I've been trying to memorize the SAT Vocab words from Direct Hits, but do you guys have any tips on how to memorize SAT vocab other than rote memorization? It feels that when I read from the Direct Hits book, it feels like I've memorized the word after reading the passages, but when I try to recall it sometime later, I can't even memorize or even recall the definition. D:

my way- I made a sentence using the words and posted them on my facebook with ‘view only me setting’, whenever I visited my profile which I do a lot, I see those sentences and they were memorized really easily. And I removed it after sat

It depends on your learning style, but here on some suggestions from an article I wrote:

Write out the words and their definitions.
There is a reason that your teachers have made you define hundreds of vocabulary words throughout your academic career. Transferring words and their definitions to paper helps transfer the information into your long-term memory.

Write new sentences for each word.
Similarly, using a word in context helps cement its meaning. Create a new sentence using each word that you are trying to master. Or, even better, write a short story that includes 20 or 30 vocabulary words in context.

Draw a picture representing the word.
Pictures create connections to the definitions. On each card, sketch a scene that helps you remember a word. For example, on the inundate card, draw a dam breaking and the ensuing flood. This will help you remember the word should you encounter it on the SAT.

Read the word aloud and say it in a sentence.
Some students learn best by hearing information rather than by seeing it. You can even recruit a parent or friend to read the card to you. If you find this learning style suits you, consider recording the definitions for later playback.

Type the words and definitions.
Type all the Repeat Offenders into a word processing document or spreadsheet. Then try to define them without looking at the definitions. You can also sort them by alphabetical order.

Analyze the roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
Can you find words that have the same suffix? If so, do they mean the same thing in both words? For example, consider the word cacophony. The root of the word is “phon,” as in symphony, telephone, and phonics. Underline this portion of the word so that you remember that word involves “sound.” Learning to associate words with related words can help you solve even the toughest test questions.

Group words by meaning.
Many SAT words have similar definitions. For example, pedantic, pedagogical, and didactic all have similar meanings. Grouping them in their own pile will help you associate “educational” with all of the words in the group. You can also write each group on paper with it’s shared definition.

Have someone quiz you.

Write out the word in a sentence and make physical flashcards. You can use the flashcards to practice, and the act of writing the words down will help tremendously with your memory.

i second quizlet. By far the best study tool. i also make physical flashcards of really difficult words and tape them around my house, as well as the shower. Studying level: Asian. Critical reading score: 800!

I think it’s best for passage reading to be able to replace words you don’t know with synonyms. Instead of memorizing definitions of words, I memorize synonyms. I replace “holistic” with “comprehensive” and “flamboyant” with “flashy.” Some words like “misanthropic” are harder to substitute, so then I’ll just memorize the definition.

i stumbled on this site called [Font</a> 99](http://www.font99.com) . It’s a mnemonics wiki, really fast way to memorize vocab. some hits, some misses. all in all pretty good

I am also strugling of learning vocabulary ^^
I had to remember about 1000 words for 4 months last year. I reviewed it everyday, i can speak the words in the middle of the night!
However, when i do reading passage, i often don’t recognize the words which is so frustrating. Except for Sentence Completion. I could see clearly each word and somehow remember it even though it takes me about 20 seconds to remember the meaning.
So this time. I will try to use the words i learn, everytime everywhere I can. They said that you have to use the word at least 10 times to make it " your " word that you can remember it by heart.

You all could try out the “method of loci.” Its a memory technique used for thousands of years, and it essentially utilizes people’s inherent ability to recall spatial memories. Search it up on the web, there are thousands of articles devoted to it.

I use this one. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sat-vocab-with-photo/id878068811?mt=8</a></p>

This application is just simple and beautiful to memorize vocabs with images.
