How to answer the "what was your SAT score" question?

Ever since I've gotten into college, I've been asked "what's your SAT score?" a lot more often. I understand why others are asking--they want to compare it to their own SAT score and estimate their own shot to a top college.

However, I honestly think that my SAT scores are nobody's business. I don't mind sharing the information on CC because nobody knows who I am, but in real life I find the act downright annoying.

What's a polite way to dodge other's questions without coming off rude? I've usually just said, "I did well," but this is usually followed by "but what was your actual score?" And how often, if ever, does this question get asked in college, and how should I deal if it does?

You should be like “I got a 2390. Back off.”

I’d rather keep that confidential.

I tried avoiding that question for a while last year (“Oh, it’s great. I’m really happy with it…”), and miraculously, after a day or two people lost interest and stopped asking. I told the people that were close though, just not to everyone who was asking.

lol interest hasn’t been dying out just yet. Maybe in a couple more weeks it will :)

Just say something like, “I’d rather not say.” Don’t even say you’re happy with it, because that translates to, “I did really well and I’m not going to tell you in case I make you feel terrible about yourself.” If you just leave it at “I’d rather not”, it can be interpreted as good or bad.

I answer truthfully. It wasn’t great but it wasn’t terrible. It was decent, and that shows people that other parts of the application have to be strong in order to crack a Top-50.
(as a disclaimer it was a 1750 - certainly “above average” but not anything fantastic)
Either that…or I substitute my ACT (which was a 30 or something). I can’t say I’m offended or put off by it. I know they just want to be helped out…and I’m happy to help.
Perhaps this is because UF isn’t really a fantastically prestigious school and the kids applying aren’t cutthroat/GPA gunner types.

You: I only got a 200.
Other Person: No really what did you get?
You: Seriously. A 200. I fail.

Or on the other spectrum

You: I only got a 2500. Was aiming for a 2600.
Other person: No, really, what did you get?
You: A 2500

Make it a joke.

Just tell them. If they:

a) scored better and start to mock you - just say “I still got admitted”
b) scored worse and appear to resent you - smile sweetly and ask “How’d you do?”
c) are cool with it - no problem

It’s not really asked in college much. It basically disappears after high school honestly. From visiting students, if you do the student panel/tour guide, you might get a random high schooler asking.

Just say you forgot. Or if you later do forget (which you should), just remember whatever’s the mean for your college and say that.

No one really asks me much, every now and then and I just say it I guess. People think it’s good, I really thought it was terrible at first but I had no idea what was a good score for the SAT.

Really, I’ve already forgotten the exact scores, especially the subject.

haha. When I ask others why they want to know, they tell me that they are aiming for a similar score in hopes of admission. (Ridiculous… I know tons of kids with scores higher than mine who got rejected). It IS kind of flattering, but still annoying.

Just say “I got like, 2401” in a half joking way or say “good enough for [insert name of college here]”
If they continue to pursue you, then just laugh it off… and start a new convo.

Try: Yeah, i got a 2400…No i’m just kidding, a 2400 would be crazy. I actually got a 2390.

What would more likely happen at my school in bluewatermelon’s case is:

So what did you get on your SAT?
Oh, I got a 2390 (nonchalantly)
Haha. Yeah, wouldn’t that be great? Seriously, what did you get?
um, I did get a 2390…

just say, “i did okay”

i have a friend in my AP US class who gets 100%/99% on every test, but for some reason he asks me what i get on my tests… every single time… he’s legit and all, but i always say “okay”, even if i got an A or F

Why do you care if people know your SAT score?

lol, seriously. So many people on here have amazing inferiority/superiority complexes

I am more than a test score.

me: “lower than <insert friend(who=”" got=“” 2400)'s=“” name=“” here=“”>"
annoying dude: “duh, seriously what did u get?”
me: “620”</insert>

Where the heck do you go to college? I’ve never once been asked in college.
The only time I ever even mentioned my ACT score was when some chick was bragging about how smart she was because she got a 30.
