I have a friend who told me he got into the business program as an incoming freshmen, I want to know.. Is it possible to apply to the business school or the engineering school as an incoming freshmen, if so how?

Yes, you absolutely can be admitted directly to the business or engineering school. The key is not only to have good stats, but to apply by the November 1st “priority” deadline. This is not binding in any way but it is your best shot for consideration and the only way you would be considered for merit scholarships and special programs like honors or scholars.

Both the business and engineering schools, Smith and Clark respectively, are what as known as LEP’s which stands for Limited Enrollment Program. Read more competitive because they limit the number of direct admits. On the Maryland application there is a place to select what school you want to apply to (ie major)/rank preference of major and the only caveat is that your second choice cannot also be an LEP.

FYI, it is possible to gain admittance to the University but not be a “direct admit” to the major of your choice. What does that mean? On your acceptance letter, it will state what your advising college is. If it says Letters and Sciences, that means you did get admitted, but not to Smith or Clark. If that happens, you can still attend, prove yourself at college level classes and re-apply as an “in-school transfer.”

Hope this helps. Best of luck with the college app process!

Very helpful, thank you very much!
