How to ask for recommendations?

Question -

When should I give thank-you notes and gifts? A few days after requesting? After being admitted? Should I give a gift to my counselor too? Also, what do I say when giving a gift?

Luckydogs - Iā€™m pretty sure that most schools consider computer classes to be ā€œacademic.ā€ You may want to check what Dukeā€™s specific policies are, though.

Hi, i printed out 2 comm apps teacher evaluation sheets today(in blank/white ink >.< is this okay?), and now im pretty nervous about one teacher that im thinking of giving the rec to.
okay, so my situation is ~~ i wanna give the rec to my physics teacher, who obviously know that im one of the brightest students ~i even talked to her a few times about things, calculus problems, science, etc. she knows me pretty well about my academic ability; howeverā€¦ last yr when i took her class,i kinda slacked off a lil, i was memorizing vocabs instead of doing physics labs! she got mad at me a bit, that was ā€¦in 2nd qtr last yr i think~of course, later on i picked up things and did wellā€¦ this beginning yr i talked to her about me self studying physics B and she even lent me her book. shes a very good teacher, sheā€™s nice to me toobut im worried that my fault last yr would ruin the rec ay, so what should i do? how do i fix this situation??

also, is it okay if i give another rec to a former teacher(now moved to another school) a rec?
what should i give along with the comm app rec?

Thanks!

ā€¦
anyone?

I think your rec will still be a strong one. Teachers arenā€™t evil, you can trust them!

Hi!

So I was wondering, what kind of information do you guys give to your teachers who write letters of recommendation for you? Thanks!

Is it okay to send in recommendations by filling out blank common application forms without your common application number on them? I didnā€™t know we could do that by inviting teacher on CA so I just printed out forms instead and filled my information in by hand. Is that alright?

In any school that asks for a teacher OR counselor recommendationā€¦would it be alright to ask a religion teacher?

Or when they say this do they mean an academic teacher or guidance counselor?
I really want to ask my religion teacher because she knows me best, but is it allowe?

Generally they mean an academic teacher. You can send your religion teacherā€™s recommendation as a supplement.

Do you guys think it would be inappropriate to email a rec teacher to ask a quick question about early decision vs. RD stuff (Iā€™ve already asked and given them all of the envelopes, etc. in person)?

Are you allowed to submit a supplemental recommendation?

How would you be able to tell which colleges donā€™t want supplements
and on the number they ask you for?

Am I totally screwed if forgot to tell my teacher to seal the envelope? (Recs are already send!)

Iā€™m sure itā€™s not a big deal (no one I know had the teachers seal the envelopes).

Is it better to have teachers write recommendation letters if you had them in your junior year? Itā€™s just I had two teachers from sophomore year who would be willing to write recommendation letters for me and they know pretty well.

Is it ok for a Spanish teacher to write a recommendation??
Sheā€™s one of my favorite teachers and I talk to her constanly. Sheā€™s going to have me for 2 years so sheā€™ll know me pretty well. Iā€™m going to be in Spanish V next year so itā€™s a pretty hard class.

Is that academic enough? Or should I stick with history/english/science/math teachers? I have some great teachers in those subjects as well. Iā€™m just not ā€œfriendsā€ with them like I am with my Spanish teacher.

Another question.

Is it really OK to ask end of junior year?
It wonā€™t seem like youā€™re being sort of pushy? Like youā€™re demanding that they do it over the summer? Because I know alot of teachers just want to relax over the summer and would rather not do any.

Or should I just ask at the very very beginning of senior year? We donā€™t have that big or competitive of a school. Most teachers post up their requirements if you want them to write a recommendation for you 2 weeks after school starts.

Spanish teachers are fine- foreign language is considered one of the core subjects. Besides, colleges donā€™t care who writes the recā€¦ they care what the person says.

I would wait to ask for recs until senior year. Thereā€™s no need to ask before the summerā€¦ most teachers donā€™t need more than a few weeks to write a rec letter. If youā€™re worried about the timing, ask teachers right at the start of senior year.

@fhg Thanks.

Thank you very much Savs!

OK so i did EA to 2 schools and i got a rec from my math teacher. Now i have to do RD stuff and i dont know who to ask.

Will i look silly if i ask in 2 weeks for another 4 recommendations?
