How to ask for recommendations?

^Nin10dude317. I have 4 out of those six schools I am applying to, (and yes, it is alot; major backup since soph/junior yr 1st sems were terrible) and I have checked with each school recently if they require letters of rec. DePaul is one school I’m looking forward to, since they require only a counselor rec.

Whereas, 3 institutions are my REACH and one may be my SAFETY, what could I do to make my approach towards requesting recs sensible? I am not sure if I posted this in my last post, but…would previous “excellent” term papers qualify? Or a simple high school resume? (BTW, I do not know how to shorten the length of my high school resume; i’ve included way too many awards and accomplishments to stay on the safe side…HELP*?)
thanks for the reply.

If you’re gonna need four or five copies, then so be it. All your teachers will have to do is just change a few words and make copies. Your teacher (should) be willing to do that if they want you to succeed.

As for that resume for your teacher, its good to include enough to pick from, but don’t go on for pages. Your teacher will most likely have to answer these questions; ‘What has this student done that shows ambition in their future career?’ ‘What traits did you notice of this student when in your class?’ and lastly, ‘Why must x University HAVE to admit you, or they’ll be missing out?’

With that in mind, give your teachers any APs taken relating to your major (and include the total number to show off), math class level, if you did DECA, or other things. College credit outside of AP/IB is a must. Don’t list every art class or band field trip. Actually, don’t bother to list your 9/10/11/12th grade schedules, cause nobody likes to read a list of 48 items. SAT scores and GPA are not needed, they already know. Keep it to applicable stuff.

Don’t include sports unless you’re serious about one, and avoid listing endless volunteer opprotunities. Do list any business camps, work experience, club presidencies, and long term volunteering.

With all that in mind, your resume should be much shorter. Add anything, even if its not major, as long as it gives a better insight of you personally, furthers your major, or shows you have a personal connection with the school.

Keep it less than a page, and short sentences at most. Always give contact info so your teacher can contact you for clarifying.

Sensei is amazing at life and loves me <3

^ my sensei is too
He never gave a detention in his 20 year career and showed anime every friday. He gave me his address when he retired and over 100 kids from as far back as six years visited him on his go away party.

Japanese teachers ftw. Nothing like french or latin or spanish ones.

^Nin10dude317: THANKS!

School starts tomorrow (YAY GRAD CLASS 2012 ^^). i will definitely limit to three teachers/coaches and submit the following (from above). I finished a sample resume earlier, and now I know what I can do to polish up.

I don’t know if there’s specifically anything about asking for recommendations in this blog but you might want to check. [uraccepted.com</a> blog featuring news and commentary from Joe College | You can be accepted at the college of your choice and we can help . . .](<a href=“http://uraccepted.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/]uraccepted.com”>http://uraccepted.■■■■■■■■■■■■■/) I used it for general admissions info and thought it was pretty decent but don’t remember anything specifically about recs. The fake conversations were hysterical. In general I agree with the posts which say to be up front with the teachers . . . and give them lots of time! Rushing them practically guarantees that your rec won’t be the best it could be.

What if a teacher tells you they’re willing but not very good at writing them? I’ve had this teacher for 3 years and thought at least respects me. If I decide I want to back out how do I do that? Should I just not mention it anymore? I haven’t handed out any materials yet. What do you do with a half-hearted “yes?” Anyone else have this problem?

^Go ahead and ask for one, but offer to mail it for them. That way you have a copy if they can write (which teachers should), won’t make them feel illiterate, and if you need it, another letter of rec.

I think it’s always a good idea to ask, not only if you can get a recommendation, but if the teacher can give you a “positive” recommendation. If someone already said that, awesome. It’s really important since recommendations are blind (you won’t know what the teacher said about you).

I’m pretty confused about the common app teacher evaluation form. Do we give teacher a teacher evaluation form for EVERY college we apply? Wouldn’t that be a of work for the teachers? Or do they just photocopy and fill out 1 form? Also, is there a way for them to submit it online or is it strictly through snail mail?

it’s tricky to rock a rhyme to rock a rhyme that’s right on time it’s trickayyyy it’s trickytrickytrickytricky

There is a way for teachers to submit their recs online. (It would make sense to be able to submit to all schools at once, as well, although I’m not sure on that. It’s tricky.)

Thank you! But is the cover letter submitted online or can it only be sent? (yah, I agree common app is tricky)

I want to ask my teachers tomorrow or the day after. To clarify, is it possible (if they are willing) to have them fill out all the forms online? Since every other aspect of my application is online, I’d rather not send out recommondation letters via snail mail, particularly because at my school it’s extremely uncommon for people to apply to 10 schools, and I don’t want them to think I’m nuts.

A bit of an unorthodox question haha…

But how do you, sort of, address the issue of spelling your name correctly to teachers who are writing your recommendations?

In the past, teachers ALWAYS misspell my name because it’s complicated (kinda of eh). But I usually shy away from personally asking teachers to fix them because most of those recommendations were trivial and for unofficial matters.

The resume thing - no one does at my school. That’s out of question, I suppose.

(Btw, I don’t know if I’m waiving the right to see the recommendation). Maybe I should check that first.

I could say you could send them some trivial email with your name clearly in the bottom but seeing as my guidance counselor still spelled my name wrong twice I’m not sure that’ll work.
you might have to push through the awkwardness and straight up ask them

I have a question about teacher variety. The two teachers I asked were my history and AP psychology teacher. I know it’s kind of stupid to ask for two teachers to write recs for me who teach in the same area, but I knew both these two teachers very well personally and I believe they would write the best recs for me. Will this impact my admission chances in any way?

How do I email a teacher to politely ask about her progress on my recommendation? I can’t send a hand-written note by mail, since I live in Texas and she’s in Massachusetts.

My school just became part of Naviance, but it won’t be active for seniors this year, so basically I can’t use Naviance.
But when I go on Common Application, it says that since my school uses Naviance, Common Application does not give me an option to send an email link to the teachers and counselor for recommendations to be sent electronically
Basically I am stuck with giving hard copies of forms to the teachers to mail (i will provide supplies).
Between the guaranteed medical schools and safety schools and so on, I have 12! Yes 12 schools to send recommendations to. Most of these programs require 2-3 recommendations each, with 5 requiring THEIR OWN forms to be filled. I have 2 teachers giving recommendations, how do I do it without irritating my teachers?

This may have been already addressed. one college i am applying to, Stonehill College, wants 2 teacher evaluation forms (that is how it is posted on their website). Right now, I have one teacher recommendation done and have asked a club moderator (for SADD) who happens to be a guidance counselor/school social worker and know me really well. Could i use these two recommendations should i ask another teacher and submit the counselor one as an extra rec? Thanks!

I have kind of a specific question. I’m planning on applying ED and I need to ask two teachers from “academic disciplines” for recommendations. However last year (my junior year) I was studying abroad with AFS. So… who should I ask? I was thinking the adviser of math team, which I’m the captain of (whom I also had for AP calc my freshman year), and my current IB SL film studies teacher (whom I had my sophomore year for honors English). Would these teachers count as being from “academic disciplines” (even though I had one a few years ago, and the other I have for film studies?)
