<p>Hey I was wondering the process of becoming an RA at College Park, if anyone would know... Are the RA rooms nice ? Do you have to be a junior to become an RA ??? Does being an RA pay for room and board ??</p>
<p>Typically, you have to be at least sophmore level to become an RA.</p>
<p>During the end of the Fall Semester, they will have preliminary information about becoming an RA for the next Fall semester.</p>
<p>In the Spring, they will have various meetings, interviews, stuff like that. They'll have a drawing for who actually gets to be an RA, and what dorms/floors they'll be an RA at.</p>
<p>Room and Board is taken care of, but you typically have to come back a week or two earlier in the fall, and you may have to leave later in the Spring.</p>
<p>If you do become an RA, don't power trip. Trust me, you will get royally ****ed by the residents on your floor.</p>
<p>so why would someone want to be an RA?? The room and board fees? Wow, that would be nice for me because that would cut my total cost to 3,000 or something. I don't want to be an RA though. I don't want to have to tell others to shut up and what not. Can you be a nice RA and still have peace? If the RA does some stuff he/she is not supposed to will they get in more trouble or will he/she not even get caught?</p>

<p>You live in a single. While it is a single, at least in the Freshmen dorms it is a very small room. I do believe you get a couch provided for you though.</p>
<p>You don't have to be a jerk when you're an RA. The best thing to be is an RA in the Gemstone dorm (Ellicott). It's not nearly as crazy as the Denton community, and you typically have better behaved residents.</p>
<p>When I was in Ellicott, we used to have some pretty crazy room parties. The extent that the RAs went to in confronting us was to tell us keep it down, and to put a towel under the door because you could smell the booze in the hall.</p>
<p>The only time my friends have ever gotten written up is if someone was a moron and walked out into the hall with a beer, if they got ridiculously drunk and puked all over the halls, or if they left their doors open.</p>
<p>Contrary to popular belief, you DO NOT have to open your door for an RA. They also cannot open your door without your permission, and cannot force themselves into the room. However, if you do not open the door for them, they can call the Police on you. If this happens, your best bet is to ditch any and all evidence and get everybody to go back to their rooms so they don't wind up doing a search of the room.</p>
<p>I don't think i'll consider being an RA. I feel like having fun, not stopping others. But that single with a couch and it all being free is nice.</p>
<p>Another thing that goes with being an RA is being "On-Duty." That's when you have to patrol the hallways on certain weekends, and you have to be on-call till I believe 4-5AM in the morning. If there are any concerns, you will be called and woken up.</p>
<p>Thats no problem, i should be expected to help some people. I guess i have to live under an RA once to see how the are really. If I have an RA that is a d-bag and everyone hates i might just be like no way. BUt if I get an RA that is nice and allows fun but control I think I may think about it.</p>

<p>RA is kind of competitive. I’ve never tried for it, but my roommate freshman year became an RA (he didn’t become an RA til sophomore year) and so did one of my roommates this year (why are all of my roommates leaving me!?!?) </p>
<p>I think my first roommate was kinda unusual to get it so quickly, but I think if you don’t have any bad history (none of us drink or do whatever normal college kids do…) you’ll have a good chance. You apply in the fall and take a class in the spring. Also, make sure you want to do this. It may seem like an easy job (and it is for some people), but my first roommate has had to some stuff that would make others really uncomfortable (like talking people off the ledge, cleaning up drunks who absolutely destroy themselves, etc.)</p>
