Can sophmores be RAs? And anyone know what they pay and any benefits they get? I hear you also have to take a special class to be an RA too

yeah, you apply freshman year for sophomore year, but all the freshman friends i knew that applied didn't get it (like, me). i think reslife wants more experienced students taking care of other students. you get free room and board, and yes you do have to take one class once a week..i think it's like an hour and a half long. and you have to do training, and come in early and leave later during the school year.

i wish i was an RA. im a rising junior and i wanna be an RA my senior year in commons. i live in commons the next two years.. since i am an hinmanCEO

Yeah, i know 3 freshman and heard of another that are going to be RAs next year as sophomores. You get free food and free room and board. I think that is all.

I would love to be an RA :]. I need the cash SO bad! I don't know if I really have the personality to do it, though...

Does RA stand for Research Assistant?

resident assistant :)

Oh ok...Thanks!

umcp11, what personality do you think you need? I think you might have the wrong idea about what kind of people RAs are. There are many different types of RAs.

Oh, I don't know. I always considered myself to be very fair/have excellent judgement & tact, but I was never particularly good at mediating...at least among my friends. I tend to pick sides in most situations because I usually have a strong opinion about who is in the right (in fact, I get angry at those kids whose default response to a problem is, "You're both wrong, so admit it and be friends again." Because half the time that is SO not true). Plus, don't RAs (for freshmen, anyway), organize things like floor/dorm outtings? Are they usually really outgoing/good at public speaking/etc.?

alright that makes sense. But most RAs i've met just don't care about anything. However there are those that really enjoy writing people up. I mean, the two RAs on my floor did nothing. The one spent all of his time with his girlfriend in his room. The other was never in his room. Then the RA with the gf left and was replaced by another RA who spent all his time with his girlfriend in his room. So few real problems ever came up. But I guess more than not you have to say, you both are wrong now make up.

As for doing stuff with the RAs, nope. No outdoor outings. I loved my floor to death, especially early in the year but i wouldn't go eat a picnic with them. We had a few floor meetings with most being the first couple days and i didn't go to those. There was one second semester. Not a hard job but if you get people on the floor that are going to complain to the RA it might get annoying.

There was one kid who complained about his roommate, who was a pretty decent roommate. I mean, he said he left the room in the morning and was too loud and complained to the RA in March. I mean, talk to your roommate before you go to the RA. What is the RA going to say anyways, leave quitely in the morning? Not really a job where you have to evaluate much and reach a decision

im gonna be an RA, doin it for the money, if your a girl u have to smile alot and be really outgoing or really strait laced...if your guy you have to be or affect being flamboyantly gay, because all of res life is flamboyantly homosexual, and i am being dead serious...
