How to convince my Professor to round my grade?

Here's my Situation:

I have earned 539/600 semester points in this particular class, my teacher states in the syllabus that 540+ points is an A. However, 539/600 points is an 89.8. My professor has already sent out an email stating my final grade is a B.

I understand that he needs to stick to his syllabus. I could understand more if I was mediocre all semester and did not do well on the final exam but, I achieved a 100 on the final exam which I think shows mastery of the course material enough to convince him to round my grade .2%. Also, my overall test grade average is a 95 and I have a 90 for attendance points, I just forgot to submit a homework assignment bringing my homework average down to a 65.

I think I have a chance at convincing him but, I'm just not sure how to approach the situation.

I would say exactly what you just did, although I find it strange if there’s no + or -. That would make it suck less if he doesn’t round up. I really don’t get why at some schools 80-90 or 90-100 is all the same.

You know what you have to do. wink wink

Why not just take the grade you earned? Your classmates who did just as well AND remembered to turn in the homework deserve to have their grade be better than yours. I don’t understand why kids to day keep thinking they are entitled to more than what they earn. Yes, you did well on tests, and that is what helped your grade. But on the homework, which is part of the bigger picture, you flubbed, so why should that not be reflected in an honest, true assessment of your work in that class?

I’ve never had a teacher who rounds up. Most of them have strict grade cutoffs and stick to them in order to be fair to everyone. But I guess it never hurts to ask. Go to his/her office and ask about it politely. If they turn you down, just accept your B and don’t forget to turn in your homework next time.

Tell him what you said here, and if he says no, then that’s it.

You earned 539 points. You did not earn 540.

I am going to be realistic and say probably not, just because he already sent out the email with your final grade. If you had caught him before those emails were sent, maybe. How has your involvement with office hours/questions this semester been?

My D was within a hair of an A in her last two semesters of math, but got an A- both times. Math teachers especially do not round up in her experience!

I’m going to guess that you only had a few homework assignments to turn in (or that he clumped a whole lot of homework into one assignment). That would have to be true if ONE late assignment could drag your homework and final grade down so far. I assume you did eventually turn that homework in? My kids teachers will give some homework credit (score knocked down) for late assignments.

If I were you I would go in on Monday and tell him you know your late homework made you come out one point shy of the A. Ask if there is any way you could make up that one point. Could you do some extra credit of some kind? And just see what he says. I would not make excuses or in ANY way imply his grading is unfair. Just say that you know you messed up, and ask for another chance to earn that point.

It’s so close…but it’s not the 540.

Next time, hand in the homework.

I’ve had professors that round up slightly based on attendance because the school doesn’t have a +/- grading scale.
