How to decide?

I have been accepted to 2 great schools, I have been dreaming about both of them since 5th grade. One is a conservatory, where I could go directly to Broadway upon graduation, one is a small private all-womens college where I could major in History, which I also love, and Arts Administration. I am torn between them both. How do I decide what to do?

It sounds like you also want some academics in college. Can you take liberal arts courses along with the theatre classes or is it mainly just theater? Would you be ok with that. To me, it sounds like you are leaning towards the all womens college just the way you seem to talk about it, but I could be wrong. If you went to the all womens college, do they have a good theater department? Just think about what you really want. You could always go to the liberal arts college and then get your MFA from either this or another conservatory.

No top program will get you directly to Broadway upon graduation. Can it help get you seen by industry people and possibly get you work after graduation, yes. Though even that is not a guarantee.

I've always been told that if you can see yourself doing/studying anything else besides MT, then you should go for that other option. It doesn't mean you couldn't still be a performer with another major.

It seems like you would be more comfortable at a school where you could have a BA in Theatre, since it gives you the option to double major or minor something that also interests you. I'm assuming that the private college as a Theatre major as well?

I think you need to think long and hard about how focused you want your education to be. At either school you'll get a great education but at either school you'll also be missing a bit of an education that the other one has plenty of. Not much/not very challenging liberal arts at the conservatory and probably not as stong of training/theatre program at the private college.

I'm sure if you spend some time and list the pros and cons for both the schools and look at them that way, you'll be able to figure out where you'll feel happier at.

I think that if musical theater was what you really, really wanted to do most of all in the wold, the choice would be obvious. If I were your parent, I encourage you to strongly consider the BA/liberal arts program and to take voice and dance classes on the side, while doing as much theater as the college has available. If, upon graduation, you decide to move on in the theater world, I would encourage you to then go to a conservatory for an MFA in acting.

Is there anywhere that you could double major in history and theatre or MT on your list? Or maybe minor in one of the areas?

Nyu --------

The all-womens college does not have a theater major, only an MT minor.

At most places where they offer a BFA in MT, your schedule is so full that there is hardly any time to do a double major.
