How to dress warmly

Coming from Cali, I need some advice dressing up to survive the brutal winter of the east coast.

Usually I put on t shirt, jeans and hoodie/jacket and that works for all four seasons, but not anymore. Right now i put on a light coat on top of what I already have and gear up with gloves, scarf, and beanie. That still leaves my legs freezing and I look kind of ridiculous. I was eyeing on one of those trench coats like in the movies where they pull out a tommy gun underneath it but they are outside of my budget for the most part.

Any suggestion to dress stylishly while staying warm?

Are you a girl?

I typically wear leggings under jeans on particularly cold days. No one can tell that you’re wearing an extra layer, but you stay a thousand times warmer.

If not, thermal underwear?

I’m living in Poland this year and it’s freeeezing. Long underwear under pants works wonders and for my upper body I wear: t shirt, small sweater, often a heavier sweater, then a thermal, then I have a pretty formal jacket. Don’t get a trench coat, it’ll make you look like a killer. Get a nice pea coat instead. Then gloves and you CAN’T leave out the scarf. I tend to skip wearing a hat.

i second leggings under jeans! Tights will also give you some extra warmth, but not as much as leggings. If you don’t have tall boots, try leg warmers.

The key is lots of layers, especially because as soon as you step inside a building you’ll be way too hot. I usually wear a tshirt or a tank top and a sweater or sweatshirt and a wool peacoat over everything. A scarf is a fashionable must-have, as is a hat or something to keep your wears warm. And if you don’t have boots, go buy them right now. There are lots of stylish, PRACTICAL cold-weather boots. Try to get ones with some sort of traction on the soles so you won’t slip on ice.

That thermal stuff sounds good… remember layers. layers insulate better. stay away from cotton if it might snow. cotton loses all of it’s insulating ability if it is wet. Go with fleece. If there is wind you might want some wind breaker on the outside. Don’t forget socks. I’m wearing 2 pairs at the moment…

But remember: pea coats are warmth for fashionistas!

I third leggings under jeans. That’s my favorite warm winter combo. Besides that, I usually wear a thick coat, some gloves, a scarf, and a hat when it’s under 40.

I actually don’t like wearing long-sleeved shirts, so I get a lot of weird looks when I walk in a building and take off my fur-lined sweater coat to reveal a short-sleeve shirt underneath. xD

Not that I care. I don’t really find the need for too many layers to keep warm. Something with a thick, solid fabric that keeps in heat works best for me. I have more than one military-styled winter coat. Love those things to death.

I’m from the south, but when we get our random bursts of coldness (below freezing, I mean), I do the following:
+Wear leggings under my jeans
+Wear boots and songs
+Wear a short sleeve shirt… Then a long sleeve shirt (sometimes go for the layered look)
+Wear a hoodie and then wear a coat that I think came from Wal-Mart.

I’d check out Wal-Mart and see about investing in a $30-50 coat.

Being from the south, I didn’t even own a coat until a couple of years ago, I came back from New York after it snowed there and realized how everyone up there survived. People in the south generally don’t own coats, because we don’t need them… but I do think they are useful. XD I love my coat to death now. haha

Thanks for all the advice. But contrary to Johnson’s assumption, I am a guy!

I have never seen leggings for guys. I do have a pair of thermal pants but I am hesitant to wear them due to temperature indoor.

I have asked many friends living in said weather all their lives and they wear nothing buy regular jeans. Sadly I don’t generate enough body heat to make it a feasible option.

As for the pea coat, I saw a friend with one (he wears it every day it’s hard to miss even for an unfashionable person such as myself). It’s too flashy for me. Which brings me to another concern. How do you wear sweaters? I have tried it with button down shirts. But after getting compliments such as “looking sharp” it confirmed my doubt. I just want something simple, like sandal-shorts-tshirt for summer.

How on earth is a peacoat “flashy”? The majority (especially for guys) are very plain.

Underarmour cold gear if you want to fork over the extra $$. Insanely warm and available in a regular athletic/sweat pant or I like the compression or fitted which fits under jeans.
Sweaters? Ummm…Wear it? Then put a coat over it or hoody. If you want to avoid “flashy” and go more casual…don’t layer.

Most types of winter coats I’ve seen for men are very plain. I don’t find them too flashy at all.

If you’re a guy, just wear thermal underwear under your pants. My legs have never been too hot wearing (thermal) leggings under my jeans indoors in the winter.

I mean, besides that, I don’t see what else you’re looking for. I know plenty of people who wear long underwear. It’s a pretty standard winter thing.

Long underwear is invaluable. I have a pair, they are womens but they might make something similar for men, that are called “climate control” and they aren’t too warm for indoors. What you need is the silk kind, not the thick waffle weave. I only wear waffle weave if I won’t be going inside for long.

I just wear long underwear (pants and shirt), jeans, knee length socks (they make thermal socks like the long underwear if your feet get cold), t shirt, hoody, and either a synthetic down coat or my wool pea coat. Running shoes or boots depending on the weather, wool socks are nice. I am a woman but that is a fairly unisex get-up and keeps me plenty warm for Michigan winter.

Thanks for the advices, I’ll go find some underarmor/thermo/long underwear tomorrow. Sport department stores like Sport Chalet usually stocks them right?

Maybe it’s due to my ignorance, I rarely see guys wear pea coats, only the most fashion conscious crowd does. I’ll check them out tomorrow as well.

Man up and just wear the jeans. I used to live in Colorado, and jeans were perfectly fine even at below-0 conditions once you get used to it.

you can buy jeans with flannel or fleece lining. try LL Bean or somewhere like that. if not, buy some long underwear or underarmor pants and wear those under your jeans. long, heavy ski socks might also help.

if you don’t like sweaters, wear sweatshirts or a fleece zip-up.

for a coat, go to any sporting goods store and there should be a bunch of not-boring options. you’ll find stuff that skiers and backpackers wear that will last forever and be super warm. If a peacoat isn’t your thing, a ski jacket might suit you better.

GET A HAT. RIGHT NOW.

and maybe boots?

Ohhh gosh I forgot. Hats and scarves are required. I never wore a scarf before this year and I am an idiot, it makes more difference than wearing a coat does somehow.

i rocked the best thing ever the other day: v-neck sweater underneath a flannel button-down. SO warm, and this was immediately following that nice little snow storm we had last week. Plus I had no need to carry around a jacket

for boots just get a pair of timbs, that what everyone wears. try warm socks too.

and yeah, if you really need to wear something under jeans that bad, your best bet is to really just get long underwear or something but you’ll be way too hot inside. trust me, jeans work.

if you don’t want a peacoat, rock a northface with a sweatshirt underneath. and for sweaters just visit your local BR or Express or Rugby or something and have a ball. Also, LAYER clothes its clutch as hell. also hoods on sweatshirts are unbeatable unless you like hats or have long hair or… wear earmuffs?

also where exactly on the east coast are you going to school? its only really cold north of like Maryland

Another option instead of a peacoat: down jacket! Get it from somewhere like Land’s End and it’s a great investment.

What everybody else said and if you get a waterproof/windproof shell to keep the wind out and the heat in you would be good. Jeans are probably the worst if u dont have lined ones or thermals.
