How to ensure I have Canadian safeties if applying to U.S?

I'm aiming to apply to U.S universities for undergrad, but want to make sure I still apply in Canada. Are the applications schedule the same, meaning I can just turn to Canada if I can't get into the U.S?

You can find the answer on each Canadian school’s website under “Admissions”.

in general, the deadlines are about the same.

Deadlines vary greatly and it also depends to a large extent on the program/scholarship you’re going for.

For instance, for Queens’ Major Admissions Awards, you need to have the app + nomination done and there at Queens by Dec 1st. General apps are due by Feb 15th.

UBC’s official deadline is Feb 3rd, but if you want a scholarship, you need to have it in by the 10th.

Thus, you should be mindful of both deadlines.

I’m saying this because, if you are a strong candidate for US schools, you should easily get into most Canadian programs and be a decent candidate for scholarships. The US applicant kids typically get the school noms and early acceptances quite easily. As an example, a few kids (incl myself) I know got very early acceptance to Queens and a major scholarship from them. Another girl I know who did extremely well at science fair/other ECs got a huge scholarship from UofT last year.

Scholarships to keep your eye out for are:
Loran, Schulich, Queens MAA, McGill major, local University scholarships. UCalgary, for example, has this 60k health sciences scholarship.

Finally, I would strongly suggest you look at Canadian schools beyond just safeties and select them carefully. Don’t apply everywhere but look out for unis/programs that suit you. Canada is quite different from the US, but the education system is also excellent.

Many Canadian deadlines are Dec. 1, so you will not be able to wait for U.S. decisions to apply. Top students usually will hear Canadian decisions prior to the U.S. ones. I agree with ecouter that you choose your Canadian schools and program with great care so as to have the options you will truly want. You can get every bit as good an education in Canada as you can in the U.S.

I think Dec 1st or earlier is a good goal to aim for with regards to Canadian schools. You’ll be generally good for all the deadlines. (Take it from someone who applied to UBC a day after the deadline and regrets it).

However, some scholarships are private and have way earlier deadlines - Loran, for example, is early October so I think he/she should keep his or her eyes peeled for those.
