Also how do we find out which major is the most competitive at a university? The schools I’m looking at don’t mention it on their website.
Some say they don’t admit by major - UF for example.
See #10 below in the first link.
Other schools will have competitive or impacted majors. UCs are known for this. See the 2nd link for UMD.
To learn you need to look school by school is my guess.
Personally I would find the right school for me. This might come in as a secondary reason but not primary ( if this is why u r asking).
Good luck.

I know many schools say this, but personally I’m skeptical. Some ask intended major in their application, and at other schools AOs can often deduce intent from the applicant’s profile. For popular majors like CS I can’t help but think they take major into account in making an admission decision. After all, they don’t want to take on more students who may choose to do CS than they can serve.
I agree with you as UF has the 2 year engineering option. Just going by what they say. And they’re not offering that to the English major (I don’t believe).
Swarthmore says this too but the other week a poster said admissions told them they had a better chance as a dance major bcuz that’s not who is applying and they need students in the major.
But i go by what they say…at least to answer OP.
But as always you make a lot of sense.
A college (or a division of the college) may choose not to admit by major, but if a major is more popular than department capacity, it may require a secondary admission process later based on college grades and sometimes essays etc…
Another method of managing demand is rationing courses for the major, such as Swarthmore limiting the number of CS courses that CS majors can take.
