How to get a Consulting Internship

I will be a junior this coming fall in IOE at UM. I am interested in working for a large(MBB) management or strategy consulting firm the summer after my junior year. I have good grades and good extracurriculars. I am planning on starting to work on case interviews near the end of summer and thought th upcoming fall semester.

I was wondering what are some things that you would recommend to start doing now to increase my chances of getting an internship next summer?

I know that getting an internship like this will be very hard, so I would like to do as much as I can to improve my chances. I know that their are numerous threads on topics like this already, but I am looking for more specifically what I can do in my situation.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Most major Management Consulting firms recruit specifically at the CoE, Including ADL, Bain, BCG, Deloitte Consulting, McKinsey and Oliver Wyman. All you need to do is check the activity calendar and apply to the companies you like when the time comes. A 3.6+ GPA should easily get you on the interview schedule.

What if ur in LSA Honors and majoring in Econ? Am I as likely to get an MBB offer as CoE and Ross kids?

no…LSA is a much larger pool of applicants… their career office also kinda sucks…

but chance? sure.

i don’t have the data from last year, but from the class of 2008, mckinsey took 5 full time analysts from lsa, so its definitely possible. for comparison, they also took 4 each from ross and engineering that year.

on the other hand, i’m not sure if bain or bcg even recruit lsa, though both target ross and engin.

Econ majors are recruited by Management Consulting Firms, not as agressively as Ross students but as agresively as CoE students.

Bain and BCG was not in LSA last year.

Bain had a table at engin fall recruiting session for full time and BCG was in both career fairs for full time and internship. McK was not in the career fair (maybe fall…I didnt see them in the winter) but they held 2 presentation and networking events with COE via IOE.

So basically out of MBB only M recruits from LSA?

All major MBB recruit at LSA, but not all of them recruit there annually. McKinsey and Oliver Wyman seem to come annually. Each hire 3-7 Econ majors annually. ADL, BCG and Bain recruit LSA most years too. One must remember that with Ross next door, most qualified students at Michigan who are interesed in IB and MBB typically end up at Ross and most of those students get placed.

I am wondering more specifically what can I do the rest of the summer to help prepare myself. What should I be doing RIGHT NOW to improve my chances of getting an internship? What could I start doing that would get me noticed and would cause me to stand out?

I am currently overseas working abroad if that makes any difference in what I should try to do for the rest of the summer.

The most important criterion is GPA. If your GPA is over 3.5, you will at least be considered and if your GPA is over 3.7, you have a very good chance. Engineers can remove 0.2 from those numbers because companies recognize the grading differences.

Other than GPA, one must of course read about the industry and understand the inner workings of the IB and MBB profession. What do IB or MBB analysts do? What are the key prodicts and types of projects that cponsuloting firms work on. etc…

Finally, if one can show an aptitude for Mathematics, technology use (Excel and PowerPoint) and languages and a “global” view always helps.

That’s pretty much it.

Thanks for the advice!

Did MBB even recruit LSA kids this year? I searched the participating organizations at LSA’s career fair and none of MBB showed up.

M did. (BB did not)… Just go next door to Ross or come up to COE up north if you want to network/resume drop.

but if BB didn’t come to LSA, does that mean its not a target? Wouldn’t that mean LSA kids have the same chance of getting into BB as kids from SUNY Binghamton?

no. that doesnt mean that. SUNY binghamton kids do not have the chance to network with them through on campus events. Neither do they have the opportunities to resume drop. Being able to do so is huge because the chance of getting your resume read from the general online application pool is close to none…

so assuming that LSA and CoE and Ross has the same class size, do you think LSA kids have the same chance of getting an interview as CoE/Ross kids?

You mentioned before the LSA’s career office kinda sucks, which decreases LSA kids’ chances. Why so if LSA kids can just drop their resumes in coe/ross and network with recruiters who go to coe/ross?

LSA career office has to cater to a huge student body with probably less resources than ECRC or Ross career office, which makes it a lot less useful. And also I feel that (it’s a personal feeling) they put a lot less effort in creating and maintaining relationship with top companies.

LSA kids can go to Ross/COE career fair and resume drop there but you are missing a huge component, the online resume drop (aka Impact for Ross and Hireme for engineering), many companies post their internship/full time position as they open up and you’ll not be able to drop your resume there.

There is a university wide resume drop thing that is open to all LSA, COE and Ross but you can see the caliber of companies posting there varies a lot more, mostly not as prestigious and you almost never get a call back from those (I applied to more prestigious companies and get calls back from HireMe, and easier companies on the common website and never get any call back;I just have a feeling that my resume got lost in the pile there.

Prime example: I applied to DE Shaw on both resume drop site. DE Shaw never called back after I submited on the university-wide resume drop thing. They called back one day after I resume dropped on the HireMe website.

I also have access to Impact starting this year because of my EGL status. IMpact is very much like HireME. I just feel that it is more hit and miss with the university-wide resume drop site. You have a much better chance of getting your resume read by applying to the same companies through IMpact/HireMe.

Bearcats, what is EGL status?

Okay. I guess you don’t have to answer that. I became one of those people I can not stand: people who don’t research it themselves. So I did and found out what EGL is and why I can’t do it.
